Got a Brother MFC-7860DW for my dad's office and am having a nightmare of a time trying to get it working. Installation with the CD resulted in the installation failing near the end. This is with the easy USB connection option.

So tried by just letting windows detect everything. This resulted in the printer working with word documents but PDF's didn't have the printer listed nor could I print windows live mail.

So I got the driver uninstall from their site and the presumably newer full installation (they have so many other things on the site but it's hard to know what to get to just have the damn thing work).

Ran through that and this time there were errors but it pushed through. However after a reboot still no dice and now even word documents won't print.

When I go to devices I see it there and it says it's working but when I try and set as primary printer I get an error.

I've attached some snapshots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I guess I will try installing via the network or wifi options, but those seem more complicated.

It if failed near the end it has failed, whether it installs 98% or 5% if it does not complete it has failed, uninstalled reload and get 100% installed. When that fails phone the brother support line or the person who sold you the contract.

Could be a fault printer.

Installed one recently as a network printer (recommended in a multi PC environment) without problems using the "Full driver & Installation Package" (the CD is useless) from:

Ensure you download the correct Windows version for each computer.

Control Centre 4 replaces the old 3 version in this download and is an improvement when it comes to configuring scanning etc.

Yeah, I think doing a network install is the way to go. Does anyone know of someone good in CT that can sort this out? I'm slammed at my own work and my dad needs this sorted. Another issue is Pastel won't start without a default printer.

It was recommended when asking about printers in the hardware bargain thread. Was quite expensive...
The one I installed replaced a very hard working MFC-7440N that the client had for over 3 years before the fuser unit packed up.

Not the cheapest in respect of running costs but they're not bad printers when setup properly and the Brother Control Centre software makes scanning to email etc simple.

Could you detail the steps for the network install? There's a router with just one PC connected. Might be able to pop in early tomorrow on the way to work but am kinda clueless when it comes to printers.

It's pretty straight forward but be warned the download is over 100Mb so you might want to download it in advance to a USB memory stick.

Leaving aside the physical printer setup (print quality, fax settings etc) which should not impact basic installation.

1) Remove the USB cable and install a network cable, power cycle the printer (I'm assuming the router has the DHCP server enabled and will give the printer an IP address).

2) Remove any existing Brother Software on the PC via Control Panel > Add & Remove Software.

3) Install the Brother software you downloaded (right click, install as admin) and follow the on-screen instructions, the printer will be displayed when you select network printer.

That should be sufficient to get you going :)

Edit: you need Win XP SP3 Pro or more recent Windows on the PC.

That seems pretty easy. Thought there would have to be some mucking about when connecting it to the router. When you say power cycle do you mean just turning it on?

If you give me remote access to the PC I can sort this for you. Teamviewer?

Wow, that's a really kind offer. Are you available around 9-9.30 tomorrow? I'll first try installing via network cable and see if that works. If not then maybe I can send up the happy camper signal.

No probs, pm me the ID and password for Teamviewer. And maybe a telephone number.

Couldn't get it sorted. Called someone from Brother and they reckon the system is corrupt. The system has definitely been hit by a few nasty viruses so maybe the best bet is to do a fresh install. Only problem is finding time to do it. Or maybe just buying a new PC.

Is this on win7? Win7 doesn't seem to handle printer drivers very well in my opinion.

Try this:
Go to control panel, admin, services. Scroll down the list till you find 'print spooler' right click it and stop service.
Then go to C: drive>Windows>system32>spool>drivers folder. There should be a folder in here called w32x86, rename this folder to w32x86OLD.
Then go back to your printers and devices and remove the brother printer from the list.
Go back to admin services list and restart the print spooler service.
Now install the printer driver/software from your disk or install file.

That should do the trick. Good luck
