I'm being billed for ADLS 384, but Telkom downgraded me to 192 and I'm
getting test speeds of 80kbps.

enjoy it while it lasts.

i bet you're only getting ~50KB/s, though ;)

He's geting 5.25KB/sec. note the lowercase b in his post, this means bits not bytes.

its almost as though telkom dont care?

*shock* *gasp* *shock* *horror* :(

Ok so now I spoke to several incompentent farts and was shunted around between JHB and Capetown call centers. The longest I had to hold was only 37 minutes. Not too shabby hey. Telkom must be really trying.

Anyway.

So one dude decides to do me one hell of a favour (bless his soul) and help me straight away and test my line speed. No waiting in the queue for me this time. And I thought WOW (as in "wow", not World Of Warcraft) there are still some nice people at Telkom. Its the luck of the draw I guess.

Anyway so he tells me that my line is just fine and that he tested for 512kbps. He reccons there has to be something wrong with my modem.
Holy hell. Why are all the other techies telling me a different story then?

Speed results.
(All firewalls disabled, and a different pc.)
Telkom crawl test:
Your line speed is approximately 63.2 Kbps or 7.7 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

Running "ping -t www.saix.net"

Anyone please help I'm desperate.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He may be right about the modem, if you have one you can borrow to test, it may be a good idea.

The other thing is, what other devices do you have plugged in and do they all have filters on them?

The packet loss could be caused by noise on the line, so if you have a couple telephones on the same line with no filters, that could be it?

Nope. Not even one telephone on the line.
I borrowed a phone from work to call these guys.

I pay for a 384 and am getting a 1024, as from yesterday!

Telkom.....I love your inefficiency.....

I love it! Atleast their incompentence is benefitting some :)

why do you only test on site?

Not sure what you mean?
I phoned Telkom at 1:20 AM and a dude organised to have a technician check things out.

My test reslts stopped timing out and I started getting a bit more consistent test this morning. When I phoned 0800 113335 option 2 they said that a couple of dudes are working on the line. :)

I'll update later. I dont wat to get too happy just yet.
Funny that I should get this excited to the possibility of getting the service I'm paying to much for. We are deprived!

OK so Telkom phones me just before 17:00 and I almost choke on my mouse!

'Could not believe my luck. A clear and friendly voice on the other end tells me that the technician worked until about 15:00 and that he tried several things to correct the problem as they are not entirely sure what the fault is.

Tears or joy welled up in my eyes as he spoke those words. I wanted to tell him that he "Had me at hello". And "you complete me!!!!". But I did not want to get ahead of myself.

The friendly voice then said that he will phone again tomorrow as I'm am not at home to test just yet. WOW!

Still stuck at work I phoned my wife to run a few tests with Telkom speed test and TCP-IQ. The results were clearly better and much more stable.

I still get packet loss when pinging international sites llike www.liveforspeed.net and my uploads are way faster that my dowloads. My upload speed does not budge at all between tests, they're identical in every test while my download speeds fluxuate by +- 30Kbps between tests.

Almost there:)

3.75kB/s?
you get faster than that on dailup;)

I think you mean 30kB/s

No I did mean 30Kbps. (3.75kB/s) ,but with the speed test downstream.
It fluxuates by 100kbps (12kB/s) now, btw and uploads speed test in still rock solid. (No fluxuations at all)
