Point taken. I find Linux only about 80% there for my desktop needs, though.

Doing a comparison of full, unrestricted versions for my 5 main home computers:

Vista Ultimate Retail - R4,900 x 5 = R24,500 ( Incredible twits price ).
MacOS X - R1439 for 5 from zastore.

That's about 17 times more expensive for Microsoft!!!!!!!

Some of us like new stuff. And some of us don't buy new pc's in the shop we build/someone else builds our pc's for us. We get the retail version so we can keep using the same os even when we change the mobo,cpu,etc.

And vista is great for me. The only issues it has had was poor driver support but thats mostly fixed now for me.

And there's a very good reason to get vista and it's called dx10.

actually lets ignore the new Windows Presentation Framework that is only available on Windows Vista.

We could also ignore the next gen Direct X

And while we at it we can also ignore all the new usability features.

Why did you people buy Vista? Is it for the fancy menus? If your PC works on XP, keep that. Only get Vista when it's OEM'ed with your brand new computer. Vista has absolutely NO benefits if your PC works well as is.

I implore you for once, please come to terms with your vast and overwhelming ignorance. Accept that you know nothing, then start asking the right questions maybe you'll get the right answers. Right now you're just angry and are aware of so little you haven't even begun to be confused. Calm down, learn to read, practice by reading relevant material, then and only then attempt to have an opinion.
Justify your statements then lets take it from there... ;)

OK, everyone needs to take a step back and chill already. You guys arent helping me.

The reason why I'm pissed off is that I thought that I could install Vista from a DSP version up to a maximum of ten times before it wouldn't work any more. My understanding, that I got from this forum by the way, is that I could change my hardware(mobo, HDDs, CPU whatever) at many times as I liked during these ten installs.

Obviously I either misunstood or was misinformed. The reason why I'm using Vista has nothing to do with this issue. But if you must know I'd like to be able to utilize things like DX10 and such when DX10 games actually start coming out.

Now, from some replies I take it that I need to phone M$. Where can I get the local number to phone them at? Can I phone them on a Sunday? What do I need to have with me before I phone them?

I'll have a look on the M$ site to see if I can find the local number so long.
 
Since its asking your for activation I assume you just follow the "activate by phone", the ask you where you are and give you the number to dial and you can phone any time of the day...

SSB, if the normal activation via the internet won't work, the automated phone in process will not either - I have had such issues with XP - you need to speak to a real person and explain the problem - they will then give you an alternate key.
 
This is exactly where you should have started. You can't start by getting angry and hating M$ you won't get Vista to activate no matter how angry you get... Wait for monday and give them a call...

I'm a bit confused, did you get a OEM copy of Windows Vista? As in you bought a OEM copy from a store without a PC?

I thought Microsoft EULA strictly prohibits resellers from selling OEM copies without a new PC?

If that is the case perhaps you should report the reseller to Microsoft, they take it very seriously and they'll probably give you a free retail copy or a cheap upgrade path...

No you are allowed to buy dsp copies from reseller without a new pc. Allot of people build their own pc's.

You have to buy some hardware with it AFAIK, doesn't necessarily have to be a whole PC though, can be a mouse, USB cable etc. ;)

Don't think so anymore. With xp you had to but I think they changed it with vista. Atleast I rember reading something to that effect at prophecy shop forms before vista launched and on newegg site there's nothing about needing to buy hardware with their oem copies.
 
ok so tell me does vista work like xp

if i reload my pc 5 times a month with the same hardware i never have to phone em, it stores your hardware and the cd key

if i change my mobo i must phone them

do you have to phone them everytime u install vista?

Whatever ShockG. I can get as pissed at M$ as I want. Wanna know why? I read the entire licencing agreement on the sleeve of the DSP package. Or at least I tried. I couldn't stop laughing. The damn thing had letters and entire words missing. Not through inproper printing mind you. It just looks like they forgot to put them in. Like they couldn't be bothered?? I mean honestly why waste money reprinting them. ;)

I'll take a picture tommorrow and show it. How am I supposed to read this ****? Paragraphs all messed up. Sentences out of context.

And from the parts I could read I couldn't find anything telling me that after I installed Vista I wouldn't be able to change my mobo, HDDs, CPU whatever.

I like using Vista. I'd like it even more if the little companies like, oh, I don't know Nvidia and Creative finally realise that Vista has been out for while now get their thumbs out of their collective a$$e$ and bring out decent drivers for hardware that they provide. But that's a different story altogether.

I'll phone them, and hopefully they'll give me a new key. If they don't..... well, cracked Vista Ultimate FTW!!! ;)
