So I had this A64 2800+ lying around, then I got a R400 motherboard for it.

So I ripped out my mothers PC's Celeron D 2.13GHz with its whiny high pitched little fan and the mobo and replaced it with the 2800+, enabling Cool&Quiet and the Smart Fan Monitoring in the BIOS thats makes the fan spin faster the hotter it gets, but real slow otherwise.

And now the machine downclocks itself to 1GHz and 1.09V when its not used (basically when its has done opening a program), and its almost totally quiet ALL the time. You can just just hear the AOpen case's powersupply fan spinning. The stock heatsinks 6cm fan also spins but so slowly its inaudable.

Since Cool&Quiet doesnt work well with overclocking and gaming I never enabled it on my rig. I'm impressed by this technology, as well as the quality and value of the Foxconn motherboard.

Anyone else like using it?

Edit: Need to get some quiet Zalman GPU cooler for my unlocked 6800le, the stock one is a whiny little biatch, especially on start up.

I put on cool n quite (via power options profile). so far no real difference in loudness.. however i dont think i have smart fan enabled.. ima go check that right now :)

My PC used to be louder than a jackhammer, until I got annoyed enough and just unplugged the fan responsible -- the GPU fan on my old Ti4200. I figured I'd rather pay for a new card if it melted, than endure another day of roadworks.

I ended up unplugging the northbridge fan as well because it also had crap bearings.

But that was a year ago and although the GPU gets pretty damn hot I enjoy an almost inaudible case with completely stock CPU fan. Not a cent spent =]

My GPU is running at 54 degrees idle, so I'd rather spend R160 to make make it cool and quiet and safe.

Otherwise my machine is pretty quiet, I have 2 80cm LED fans that have adjustable speed (use one in front to keep hard drive cool) with Vantec vibration dampener kits, and the heatsink fan is pretty quiet.

Hi

I'd just like to add my own efforts at quietly cooled AMD64, after lots of efforts with my Nforce2/2800+

- Removed the stamped case-grille from the 120mm intake fan (strangely, the fan is still audible, whooshing through the dust-filter)

- Replaced the stock HSF with a Zalman CNPS7000B and used the 7V connector (nicely quiet)

- replaced the whining stock northbridge HSF with a blue Zalman fanless cooler (bliss, sweet bliss)

- suspended my hard-drives using shock-cord (braided rubber used inside poles in common hiking tents)

- used Coolbits + RivaTuner to underclock the gfx by 40% in 2D mode and drop the gfx fan to 50%. When gaming, it returns to full speed

I've enabled CnQ, but I think it needs revisiting. Anyways, I can only hear the front intake fan humming softly.

I'm chuffed with the fact that the PC is cool (CPU hits 52C under load at 12% overclock, gfx hits 65C after long gaming periods), stable and noticeably quieter. Some day I'll find a simple way to quieten that intake fan!

Eeeeewwwwwhhh!
:p

Heard about it, yes. There's unfortunately *no* way I'd dump my pride and joy in a box and fill it with cooking oil. No chance at all!

Bit inpractical...

That is one way of putting it. Plan to throw away the PC in a couple of weeks time when the oil turns rancid.

Lol, I inadvertently pulled a early aprils fools joke on my brother.

He thought I was using hyperbole when I described how quiet our moms PC was. So yesterday he wanted to print something and the laserjet's connected to her PC (our familys 5 PC's are networked) , so he checked it first and due to the angle of the light thought the green LED wasn't on (but was refracting the sunlight) and the lack of buzzing from the PC that it was off, so he pressed the power button and the screen came on and showed the shutdown procedure...

ROFLCOPTER ATTACK!!!

I am now jealous of my mothers quiet PC...

Next week I'm getting a Vantec CPU Cooler and a Vantec VGA Cooler and hopefully I will have nearly noiseless bliss. Opinions? Anybody using them?

The two case fans are already quite quiet and the PSU too.

I also had excellent results from my AMD64 cooler... Very quiet, and the fan spoins at about 1000rpm -> 1400rpm (idle -> full load).

I also removed my stock MSI nForce4 NorthBridge HSF (spun at 9000rpm!). I replaced it with a Zalman heatsink (I also added silent a small 40mm fan blowing over it, just incase).

My stock MSI 6600GT cooler was the noisiest in the case by far, so I got a Zalman VF700-Cu. I run the fan at 5V and its perfectly quiet!

Very happy with the setup no :)
