do doctors assume everyone has a suitcase with walking around gold in?

doing a procedure for our baby today (tongue tie snip) and found out that it costs R3000 that we have to pay and then claim back from medical aid. i would have assumed that's what a medical aid was for, so that people don't have to go to the bank, draw the money at the teller (or at the atm over a couple of days) so that they can pay the doctors.

seriously, it pees me off.

previously my wife had to do two procedures and we had to pay, in cash (no eft or cards accepted) about R10k for each procedure. we're super lucky that she is good at saving, but what about other people who don't have walking around gold?

No card or EFT sounds dodgy.

Often we have to pay and claim (provider is not contracted in to medical aid) - just did this for R3400 for stuff for my wife. But they take cards (hello ebucks)...

ok, they made a mistake. R1800. can do cards at least.

for my wife's things they wanted cash only. then after her (in hospital) procedure, she had to go back to him for a followup to check the wounds and get stitches out... for which we were charged full R800 consultation fee. was in his room for 3min. ffs.

Watch the movie "sicko". Being a doctor is a license to kill, and also to print money. Your health and well-being is a very distant second thought.

Sounds like dodgy doc. Every procedure we've had done, follow-ups were free.

I'm sure that is true some, but not all of, the time.

ALWAYS ask for a discount.

I recently had to have my tonsils removed, and have an MRI, My bills were as follows:
ENT: R1700 - Discount of R500
Anaesthesiologist: R1500 - 50% discount (R750)
MRI: R1800 - no discount but they allowed payment over 6 months.

This just shows that ask and you shall (usually) receive!
Good luck - I know its rough :)

It must be hard being restricted to one doctor.
This is what I don't get. Usually with any transaction of a significant amount, you found out the details about payment and whatnot before you agree to the transaction. Except, it seems, when it comes to medicine.
If you want to buy a car and the dealer tells you that you have to pay for it cash in hand and sort out finance with a bank afterwards, do you go through with it or do you go to a different dealer?

According to you the majority of docs are dodgy :D

Well I can honestly say that we have never been asked to pay for the follow-up appointment post op. Scans, scopes, births , all have had the direct follow-up covered in the procedure cost.

that's what made me fall off my chair two weeks ago. the doctor who did my wife's unplanned cesarean told us to make a followup appointment. i phoned to find out what the cost is and the receptionist said the two week followup is included in the procedure cost and so is the 6 weeks checkup. still took my wallet, just in case.

especially if your gynea and a different doctor refers you to this onewho specialises in treating the thing you need treated.

guess we should have gone to dischem instead?

If you need a specialist you abide by their terms and conditions.

I'm afraid that's the case with any specialist(not limited to medical field).

The difference here is that you don't have to pay a fee every time you speak to a new car dealer.

You do if you take the car and use it for a few weeks.
The guy's product is his time. You use this resource, you need to pay for it.

LOL. This sort of thinking why doctors literally get away with murder. Why even when they kill someone they still get paid. Why even when they are blatantly negligent, they still get paid. Why they get it completely wrong, they still get paid. Literally no SLA needed. Almost never held accountable. When they are, they bitch to the papers and media about going out of business because insurance is too expensive. Gods amongst men.

HPCSA is a thing. Prosecutions are a thing. If you're not happy with doctors working the way they do, become one yourself.
