Ok to mix thermal paste?

A question I have never had the answer for. Is it ok to mix thermal paste? Old and new? New and new? etc..
 
I would not recommend it. Some of them have different chemical compositions...
 
If it's the same brand, it shouldn't be a problem. The old one might have oxidised, or something, though.

Mixing a ceramic paste with a metallic one wouldn't work too well, I don't think.

Besides, you never know what chemicals these people use as anti-caking agents or colourants or whatever, and there's always the chance you'll get a reactive combination when you start mixing things that weren't meant to be...

don't mix different brands guy. I heard that writing on the cpu with a pencil is also good though, 'cos the lead in it is a good conductor.
 
Was just something I observed, obviously I would not mix paste :P. Saw a mate of mine apply new paste onto old thermal paste. Whats the best material to use when cleaning paste of a cpu? Is TP ok?
 
acetone with a lint-free cloth

u can get a small bottle at your pharmacy for less than R10

btw, wtf is tp?
 
i cleaned mine off with tp - fold it up into a sharp edge to get into those grooves on the sides.

works fine, so no problems using tp i guess.



**just don't put TOO MUCH thermal onto the cpu when you install it - remember it gets squished together.
 
TP alone will not work. You need an alcohol based cleaner. Like LFX mentioned it is available at a pharmacy.

How much will it matter if I don't use isopropyl alcohol or something similar? Like if I only use TP?
 
i got EVERYTHING off by simply using plain old TP. it will get it all off don't worry about alcohol.

if it's good enough for your ass, it's good enough for everything else.
 
no it does NOT take everything off. I'll prove it to you with a microscope

Just so you know tp on its own is not enough, sies man Keeper:P
Btw whats up with chicks and tp? they can go thru 2 rolls in a day without number 2'ing!!!!

Ok im off to get some Isopropyl Alcohol at the chemist. Is there any specific cloth I should use or buy? TP will break i'm guessing :erm:
