Anybody know where I can download application form? I've been to the local SASSA office but I cannot sit in that queue... PLEASE PLEASE have mercy...

You need to complete the form in front of a SASSA officer, so having the forms beforehand will not help. Sorry!
Fair enough, but is it possible to see the forms so I can clue my old man up on how to complete it? His eyesight is not the greatest and he will not fill it in correctly!!

My dad spent a day applying.

He gets a pension and figured he'll also get some state pension as a grant. After spending the WHOLE day there. They said he can't apply as he's getting pension already :D

So my old man only gets an RA monthly payment of R513 per month. The rest of his living expenses are paid by me. Only one debit order goes off his account monthly and i transfer about 2k per month to cover that plus some ATM withdrawals.

Will only the R513 RA count against the pension grant that they would pay him?

Yes, but he will still get some.

He should be fine:

be a South African citizen or permanent resident
live in South Africa
not receive any other social grant for yourself
not be cared for in a state institution
not earn more than R64 680 per year or own assets worth more than R930 600 if you are single
not have a combined income of more than R129 360 per year if you are married, not have assets worth more than R1 861 200.

Thanks guys, I will read through all the material and firmly coerce the old man to go and apply. He's 72 now and been retired for about ten years being supported by yours truly for the most part! Been refusing to go apply for several years despite having no income.

SASSA card also gets him discounts at some places...

OK, so I read through the SASSA doccies, and they are a bit vague.

I gather he needs to take his:
1) ID document
2) Proof of marriage certificate or death certificate of spouse
3) Proof of income and assets

For point 3, what does he need? 3 months bank statements and if so do they need to be stamped by the bank (FNB)?
Does he need to take his SARS tax reference number?

How does he prove he doesn't have assets any longer beyond his vehicle?
He sold the house to my sis, is that going to complicate things? No money changed hands so she owes him (or his estate if he passes) about 850k on paper.

You need to make a letter stating the amount you pay into his bank account as well .

OK, so depending what the 3 months statements show, explain my deposits. Usually I EFT between 1.5k and 2k.

Ugh, I see in May he had me sell his Vodacom shares, which resulted in a transfer into his account of about 6k. Then he went and bought new tyres for his car and some other odds and ends. Money all gone :( Explaining this shouldn't be a problem will it? ... as it was a once off thing and now he has even less to his name.

He has an income = YOU :)

Nee man pitte! :D

Its fraud if you receive a government pension as well as income from another source. However its not uncommon for people to receive a pension while working.

God did you guys see the queues at Shoprite and PicknPay today? :wtf:

SASSA are lax with their checks - a family member of mine receives the state pension even while receiving his employer pension. You'd think something like that should be dead easy to check.

Something like this?

1 July 2015
To whom it may concern

This letter serves to inform the reader that I, X (ID number xx), transfer funds on a monthly basis to my father, Y (ID number: yy), bank account number 12345678901. The amount can vary but is usually between R1500 and R2000 per month.
The majority of this money is required for his monthly debit order for his medical aid membership with ABC Medical Aid.

Kind regards,
X

Signed: ............ Date: ...........

I'll also give him print outs showing the sale of his Vodacom YeboYethu shares which would have reflected in his bank statement 2 months ago.
