I have a DSTV decoder that a previous tenant left behind

I heard that you cannot just go and sell it as it's registered in the decoder owner's name, which is not me

I don't use it so what can I do with it?

Is there a way for me to sell it?

Alternatively I don't want to just throw it away so do I just hand it in at a DSTV shop?

Other options?

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated

Other options is to use the casing for an Orange Pi to make a media player.
There's a few bits and pieces inside that you can tinker with

Depends on which decoder it is. What is the model number? Is the SC still with/in the decoder?

You will have lots of issues trying to sell it as a working decoder without the direct help of the original owner.
MC is also quite uninterested in taking it off your hands, One would think they would want to clean up their database, by decommissioning the decoder and the SC, but when I tried it with my decoder, they were not even interested. I just took it to an electronic goods scrap yard and that was it. Got a few cents/kg.

Correct... resale value is R0.00. I've even tried on failtree and Carbonite.
Best used for electronic bits to play with.

I stripped out the PSU, the HDD and the DVB tuners. A local repair guy wanted them as spares. Got a few bucks that way. Spares for older decoders are very hard to find.
