I wonder if she realises that the divide can be crossed with the valley of telkom between us and the rest of the developing world.
has she ever wondered why some of the countries here in africa have a bigger internet penetration even when their infrastructure is worse than ours?

oh well ........... at least she briefed the prez.

I hope she and all her delegation read this .....

• Insufficient bandwith provision, which varies around the world, widens the digital divide. These bandwidth differences must be overcome so that all users of ICTs may have equal access to available information and knowledge. The current Japanese 12 Megabandwith level, able to accommodate MPEG 7 for $12 per month, should be retained as minimum level and maximum cost worldwide by 2005.

Hi rpm,

we have a major role to play .....

• Many NGOs have requested a significant funding allocation to encourage Civil Society participation in and useful input to the WSIS process.

Man it would be great if something comes of this. If SA had the cheapest bandwidth around and the word spread, this country would become a destination for business and investors.

It's already a beautiful country and it's obviously very popular amongst foerigners so now if Ivy can put sum pressure on Telkom to slash prices that would be one more HUGE reason to live in SA.

Just imagine where SA would be now if it weren't for Telkom

A. Our Common Vision of the Information Society

1. We, the representatives of the peoples of the world, assembled in Geneva from 10-12 December 2003 for the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society, declare our common desire and commitment to build a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society, where everyone can create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge, enabling individuals, communities and peoples to achieve their full potential in promoting their sustainable development and improving their quality of life, premised on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and respecting fully and upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Dr. Ivy will sign this declaration

We need to remind her and ICASA, throughout the whole of 2004 what she has signed .....
You ought to know by now that these summits are just for show; nothing actually HAPPENS.

Agreed, binding declarations are signed and there is one helluva lot
we can do to make sure that something is done.

These guys and dolls, Ivy included, hate to be embarrassed amongst their short-lived friends. If they fail, we embarrass them. When they know this, some of them will do something some of the time.

Umm, I'm interested; since when is "Megabandwidth" a unit of bandwidth? Not to mention, what the hell is MPEG 7?

[8D] It goes to show you how far behind we are. They are using English words we don't even understand! Take a look at mobile communications. Do you know that the Japanese already watch TV on their mobile phones? I kid you not! 2Mbits on tap - anywhere! They are 5 years ahead of us, already talking 4G and we haven't even left 2.5G.
So you can see, it's not just the Japanese language we don't understand [;)]

Hi folks

I sent off a letter to the world summit committee for civil society entities. I am well aware that there are many possible improvements on these letters, but by harping too long on small details things might never get done. I simply want to make certain that our momentum is maintained.

I will inform you about any feedback. Please feel free to give your views on the matter or criticize my lack or writing skills :-)

Regards,

RPM

Dear Sir/Madam

We are the largest Internet user group in South Africa, representing about 10% of all broadband users in the country. We are a non-profit society with no affiliation to any business or other organizations, and our project is completely self-funded by ADSL users. We are doing our best to improve the broadband service for all Internet users in South Africa, but find this task increasingly difficult in an environment where there is a government protected telecommunications monopoly. While Telkom is trying to satisfy shareholders and directors with higher profits, users have practically (apart from the inefficient government organisation ICASA) no voice or protection against corporate greed. This situation is keeping the economy back and slowing down possible progress through IT.

Can you please advise on possible forms of action outside of the South African setting. Since the government is a major shareholder in Telkom our combined voices are simply ignored.

Regards,

Rudolph Muller

good on ye brotha
maybe should have mentioned how telkom is so backward an afraid of their profit margin that their unwilling to invest or even look at new technologies until the rest of the world has basically replaced it already.
take for instance isdn we only got it when the rest of the world basically went over to adsl and other broadband options.
Also doesn't telkom label isdn as broadband? and isnt broadband actually speeds above 256 up and download?[8)][:I]

New service by Telkom broadband speeds up to 5kbps for only R1k a month. heheh
