Hi All

Need some help. Got a 10 year old P4 3.0 ghz hyperthreaded, 512mb ram and 80gb hdd which still runs strong. Pc is used for mild storage and document editing.

What flavour of linux and apps can I run that supports modern MS office formats?

If can find some old ram lying around or for free from mates I suggest you try and bump the ram up by another 1GB Xubuntu or Lubuntu should run just fine. The extra ram will help a lot.

For office compatibility look at WPS office.

The pc was bought with 256mb ram and I added another 256mb which I found so it's running dual channel now. Doubt I will find anything else.

Will check out the office app.

If you tell us the MB or PC make & model maybe we can see if we have something lying around.

All I know is that the mobo is ASRock and the ram is ddr400. It's currently not connected to the internet because I don't have adsl and I only use the wifi hotspot on my android for my other devices.

The computer is nippy under XP. Once Zonealarm and Avira are loaded on startup everything else loads quickly. I will give Lubuntu x86 a go.

I'm a ubuntu fan myself so it would be my first suggestion too but if it turns out to be too heavy for the p4 you could try Arch Linux. It's a very lightweight distro but you can add whatever you need.

If you miss the look of XP while using Lubuntu, take a look at this ;)

Family will definitely love this theme :D

Noted. My server is Ubuntu and also the pc on its way to me will have Ubuntu.

Did some testing on distros for XP replacement last year and Linux Lite performed well on underpowered systems, definitely worth looking at.

Tough choice between all the lightweight packages. Don't know which one to download.

I have been using Peppermint Linux for years and it is awesome. Only uses 112 mb ram after booting. Your 512 mb will be enough for most things.

At the beginnng of the year, I discovered elementaryOS. One of the best lightweight distros.

Just today I installed Ubuntu 13.10, which comes with LibreOffice, on a P4 HT that was previously running XP!
