Old P4 running XP to Linux

Ja I'm guessing closer to 2GB, I'll have to check. But it's running very smoothly.

I have done with success, using Ubunto up to ver 10.04 and my machine was a Pentium4 Mobile 2.8Ghz with just 1GB RAM and a 40GB hard drive. Stick to Xfce or "Lite" versions and don't aim at the newest releases. It should serve you quite well. It boots into about 175MB RAM and hardly ever goes over 650MB in regular use with a mail client, browser and office apps open.

+1 for Lubuntu, i'm using it atm on old laptop and it runs like a charm. You can expect some slow down when you start doing web based flash stuff and have multiple pages open like in youtube but for the rest it runs very well. Plus the LXDE desktop is very similar to XP so the transition won't be too harsh.

Kubuntu is also pretty light but i personaly wasn't fond of the KDE desktop.

Linux Mint Xfce. Xfce is light weight enough for those specs. And with Mint, you get all extras, like codecs, players and Libreoffice as part of your installation. No extra installs needed afterwards. Everything just works.

The pc was bought with 256mb ram and I added another 256mb which I found so it's running dual channel now. Doubt I will find anything else.

How many slots in total? I checked & I have some ddr ram you can have.

I think 3 slots but the mobo guide mentioned something about memory speed when filling all slots. No worries though. I have found an old copy of linux mint from the pc format days and will give that a go.

It's here if you want, also have Linux Mint 17 XFCE edition if you want.
