As this neatly demonstrates, paper money can be arbitrarily invalidated. Yes, the reserve bank says they will still exchange them, but they do so only to maintain the highly theoretical "legal tender" status of these coloured pieces of paper. Moral of the story - don't stash your loot in cash, it could be meaningless tomorrow.
