Old refurbished computer?

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get one of these, besides Junkmail and classifieds? I know some shops specialise and I'm looking for a P3 or something to use as a media server.

http://www.device.co.za/ - They sell refurbished HP/Compaq and similar desktops - often the machines are high-end (for their time) workstations. I've used many for firewalls and similar jobs - they've always been reliable.

I was actually reading through the old thread and got a price of a new PC which seems reasonable. It's R1679.00 for a Celeron 2.8, 256MB, 80GB HDD and DVD writer. I may take something like that ...

yea new low end pc's are cheap man and faster than a p3

just remember only use 512 meg ram or more

Wow - that's double what I'm looking at Let me tell you why I need one.

I have my main PC which is reasonably high end and ideal for me. Being the main PC, it has a wireless b/g/n access point which I use for streaming to the media streamer/AV sytem downstairs. However, the wireless signal isn't that great and ethernet works much, much better. The problem there is cabling from upstairs to downstairs and keeping it neat.

My solution is to have a little PC running right next to the streamer/AV system which can be connected via ethernet. I'll then load all the media on this small PC and stream via ethernet (100mbps vs 35mbps). I'll install a wireless card to this little PC so that I can still access the HDD from upstairs.

Hence, the minimum spec is whatever is needed to run the server software, as this will be the only use

Right, you never said anything about how much you wanted to spend or even the purpose.

I assumed you were looking for something to use as a PC for work/surfing/email.

How is the streaming done? HTTP or something similar? HTTP streaming from a static source (like a movie file or something) doesn't require much processing - a P3 should work just fine.
