Old SA Telephone Plug, will Telkom change it?

I recently moved house in Cape Town, and it seems that it still has the old SA Telephone plugs and not an RJ11 connector. The line is terrible and the problem seems to be the adaptor from the old plug to RJ11. I would now like to get an ADSL line, but the snowy line is very concerning.

I also have another line in the house that got disconnected after the tenant moved out. That line has a RJ11 connector and I thought of replacing the Old connector with that, but as far as I know, it would be illegal to tamper with Telkom property?

If I open a fault for a snowy line, would Telkom replace the old plug with a RJ11 connector at no cost?

In all likelihood, yes. Just make sure that you are reporting a Voice fault (crackling line, can't hear other person, have tried another handset, etc.)
 
Or just go and buy a plug at MAKRO i think has them and install it your self unless your phone has the old plug on it. Just 2 wires to connect
 
Telkom's property ends where the line enters your house (there's usually a little connector box there).

Therefore, if you know what you're doing, I'd say chop it off and replace - no-one will care/know.

Not quite. Telkom's property ends at the jack (first point of entry). If the OP logs a fault and the techie sees that the OP has messed around with the jack, he will walk away and tell the OP to fix his own mess.
 
A telkom guy was called over to my folks house to fix the adsl disconnections, he was looking around and said they'll need new adsl filters and such, just as he was about to leave he noticed me working on a bunch of old PCs and told some sob story of his little nephew needing a PC, so I decided ok I'll give him this piece of scrap PC if he is willing to fit new wall plugs and filters, first he said he can probably fit one filter then I think he felt guilty and fitted new wall sockets and filters... he glued them nicely and all.

Moral of the story(tl;dr)... telkom employees can do things of the books if you're nice enough.
