Old-school shaving

How about going old-school cuthroat? Have a friend that still uses them.

FTW!!!

Though, this require a more substantial up-front investment, thinking hones, strops, pastes, etc. Not to mentioned the very steep (and often painful) learning curve.

Well worth all the effort though!

The problem with the local suppliers, especially retail stores, is that they put insane markups on these products.
Sometimes it works out cheaper to buy direct and have it shipped. Obviously takes much longer and can be a hassle.

Besides Mantality, you can also try:
http://www.takealot.com/
http://www.sharpedge.co.za/

Bought from Mantality (primary stockist of Bluebeard products), Takealot (hit and miss) and SharpEdge (mostly middle to bottom of range) in the past as they were much cheaper (up to R700!) than other suppliers. EnglishShavingShop aka Mr Cobb is a tourist destination.

Quite liking this :-)

Bluebeards Revenge Scimitar

I think of myself as somewhat of a purist when it comes to old-school shaving, being a huge fan of the cut-throat and all the pampering (read hassle) that goes along with it.

I am, however, seriously considering on of these.

I grabbed myself one of those cheap Lion branded old school safety razors...the blades costs almost nothing so I chuck them as soon as they show a hint of bluntness.

Question...are the blade formats for those things standardized? I've got a 25 bucks lions handle thing which could do with an upgrade, but would like to stick to the cheap blades.

Cut-throat is not for me...too many mornings with <5 hour sleep and barely conscious. No way in hell I'm getting an open blade near my jugular like that....

Yeah, I hear you on the straight razor!

A quick compare between Bluubeard, Lion, Timor shows them all as identical in form, so I would imagine there is a standard.

Cool...will check for an upgrade then.

Pretty sure there is a beaver & fox shop in brooklyn ( or whatever absurd english sounding X and Y name they picked )...

I'm considering it less after today.

I just finished a shave using a DE razor, and I am instantly reminded the image I saw in the mirror after my first attempt with a cut-throat. It did not go well. LOL!

This is the first time in about 12-odd years that I bring a blade to my face that isn't a straight (granted, the one or two occasions I forgot either y razors at home on trip), and it is fascinating to be reminded how much dexterity goes into shaving this way. Dexterity I obviously don't have!

No thank you, I'll stick to my straights for now. I don't even want to think what my face is going to look and feel like tomorrow!

I felt like you are feeling now and thencI headed over to the digitalbarber.co.za and bought a "start up" kit.

The service was beyond excellent. With the start up kit I ordered feathers blades which I would not recommend for a beginner, my face got a beating with those blades. I switched to cheap cheap Super Max blades (R13 from clicks) and it is awesome!!

Just note that it takes a while to get the stroke and pressure etc 100% right but when you do its Godly and I will never go back to the ****ty 3 blade or 28 blade gilette or what have you razors.

I struggle my whole shaving life with ingrow hairs and since shaving with the DE razor I have not had 1 ingrow hair.

Take a look at some youtube videos to see how to lather your soap, pressure, stroke etc. The more you watch the more you would want to shave with a DE razor.

The soap and after shave balm can also be bought from Digital Barber which I plan on doing soon.

Do it and trust me you will never look back!

That sounds promising indeed.

Decent prices there as well.
