Old-school shaving

So I'm bringing an old discussion back to life here, sorry. I have been shaving with either a DE razor or a shavette for the last year and love both. Best blades I could find locally is the Gillette Minora blades. Supermax is way to blunt for my taste, and I only use Lion blades if I have nothing else. My local p&p decided to stop stocking the Minora blades for some reason, so after panicking for about 5 minutes :P I googled at found them at Makro, R300 for the entire carton. (thats 100 blades, so R3 a blade). after that consider: I have used a single blade in my DE razor for 4 shaves already and it still feels sharp. Will probably change it out after 5 shaves, regardless if it starts tugging or not.

Because its standard equipment for suicide

Hold still, this will only take a minute.

Tried this method, but it really didn't work as well as twin blade cartridges and the blades wore out faster. The good disposables also work far better than the double edged razors.

Got myself a DE (Merkur closed comb) after stumbling upon the Wicked Edge subreddit.

Been using Lion blades, and because they so cheap I bin them after a month. So that about 4-5 shaves (I let my beard grow out and only shave once a week, cause I am lazy).
I am running low on shaving cream and would love to hear what you use CommanderBigMac. I see BodyShop has its own brand for R150 for the tub.
The shave is MUCH closer than any cartridge razor I have used (Mach3 or Fusion). Further more there is a certain pleasure in taking your time with a DE and shaving carefully. It makes you enjoy the experience more rather than seeing it as a chore.

DE is shaving is a must

I have used, bic, lion and merkur blades - still want to get minora from Makro.

Apparently the body shop tub is well worth it

I am on a tube that I got from the paki's barber place

I bought this Italian shaving cream from a knife store in Sandton City.

Will head to Makro at the end of the month an buy a box of razors. And will grab a tub of shaving cream from BodyShop.

I also suggest to any new DE or SE shavers... buy aftershave. Its worth it. First of all you smell great, second of all the burn makes you feel manly.

Hmmm, I keep blunting the damn disposibles and other cartridge blades, maybe this route is worth an investigation. All the comments about wet shaving, dry shaving is terriable, some nice Geillete gel and you're good to go.

Anyone know where I can have a straight-edge sharpened? I have a couple that need to be properly honed. Pretoria/Joburg preferably.

Alternatively, the gentlemen who use cut throats, do any of you do it yourself, and what grit stone do you use? I'm looking for a 10000+ grit stone, but can't find one anywhere.

I'm not referring to stropping. I'm talking proper sharpening.

Thanks

Phone some of your local salons and ask them who they send their scissors to for sharpening. The local salons/stylist here all seem to use the same place (guy collects weekly) and he does straight-edge razors as well.

Ideally you should have a collection you can rotate through.

Thanks. Haven't even thought of that!
I have 5, three of which I rotate through on a regular basis.

The other two I haven't used in a very long time and want to get them serviced before bringing them close to my face.

Pardon me for resurrecting this thread, but i've recently started ye ol traditional method with DE razors.
My problem is that while the blades are available everywhere, I can't seem to find the other necessities.

I live in the middle of nowhere and buying online is preferred, but all the places I found is insanely expensive.
I do have a badger shaving brush that is older than me and its knot is very degraded. I'm looking for a new one, but paying thousands is not an option. I would prefer to stick to badger and not the synthetic or boar that is readily available.

At the moment I'm using palmshave that I got from Clicks. Only because I couldn't find any shaving cream or soap online or anywhere else that doesn't cost an arm or a leg. The only thing I want cut is my beard, not my limbs.

I almost wish I never experienced DE shaving. I was lured in with massive savings, but all the other stuff is way more expensive.
But going back to useless cartridges is not an option. Once the apple is bitten, going back into the unknown is impossible.

How about going old-school cuthroat? Have a friend that still uses them.

I went back and by using the denim trick each cartridge gives me many months of triple edged shaving. My last cartridge had to be chucked after only four months because I dropped it :o
