I have been looking online recently at second hand car prices online while searching for a project car and have been quite surprised at what prices people are asking for some cars. I saw a mk 5 ford Cortina 3.0 for R150000. 80's model Toyota Cressida 2.0 for 75000. Four door mark 2 ford escort for R80000. Most of these cars are not considered classics, or having any thing special about them to be considered collectable that could justify such high prices. These were bottom of middle range cars in their heyday. The ones I mentioned there was not even an attempt to restore the car properly. There are so many of some of these cars floating around you could rebuild one completely at a very low cost from scrap parts. Are people really paying these ridiculous prices for these cars?

My guess is these people value them based on their own perceived sentimental value or something. One car might not be worth R150K to 99.9% of people but might be in your view.

It's ridiculous, I doubt anyone pays such prices.
Yeah I thought so too. It's like these people dream up some figure hoping some idiot will bite. I mean R150000 for a Ford Cortina it better be a rare model that's 100 percent original with very low mileage or restored meticulously. Price would still be a stretch.

Its a bit of lunacy at the moment. The chip shortage hurt modern cars requiring circuit boards for NAV and other systems. So because there is that there seems to be a mood where people are charging exorbitant fees for all types of vehicles.

Im a Toyota fan and a 2011 Gen7 Hilux wholesale was around R170k-R180k 2 years ago, its now around R200k-R210k.

I have also been looking in the last few weeks and the prices are ridiculous for 2nd hand vehicles. Absolutely crazy.
Property as well, I just saw a flat in my complex going for over a million bux. I laughed when I saw that as I only paid R575k 11yrs ago and then spent the following 2hrs looking at prices in the towns in my area and came to the conclusion the pricing is right

Everything is ****ing expensive

Here’s an another example:

1996 BMW M3 570Whp
While this M3 could be considered a classic model another ridiculous price. I shall counter you with this 1.6 Cortina bakkie for 120k

all the cars you mentioned are rear wheel drive

rear wheel drive manuals are very sought after these days

Some sellers on the BMW Fanatics suffer from this exact issue. Someone was listing a car for his buddy, an E34 5 Series from 1991, and the suggested price before entertaining is R135K.

Not sure if I’d label an E36 a classic personally, but it does look great in M3 guise.

Pretty but terrible to drive. That transaxel gearbox makes the shift horrible.

Those wheels also aren't right.

The E36 M3 especially the German spec while still a long way off from being 30+ years old will definitely need something worth collecting. I remember when these first came out everyone was comparing their race cars against this M3 and a lot of bragging if they ever beat one. A normal E36 is another story there's millions of them all over the place.

the owner of this dealership is in our subaru group.Lets just say his prices are "very competitive".He was selling a 2006 wrx sti for around +- 375k which is expensive. Those cars usually go for 140k to 250k.

That's quite an interesting theory. I wonder why that would be. Still cannot justify most of the ridiculous prices out there. I also think most of the older cars pre 85 were rear wheel drive. There's thousands of them around.

At least WBC is not in on the nonsense, RWD and it looks to be in mint condition.
