OLED TV

@Penquin, soz man, but the general princaple is still the same.
So OLED would then be more like plasma, but just use much less power?

No worries mate, yes the technology works sort of like plasma with an electric current being applied to organic film instead of gas cells like plasma. This is very interesting technology and I believe it would replace all digital display technologies in the near future. OLED can be transparant or be folded. Think Minority Report. Read more on OLED-info.com

Samsung haven't commercially produced an OLED TV, so I think you're confused. Also, since the sets that you are talking about are LED backlit LCDs, they can't control areas because Samsung uses sidelighting to make the screens thin.

The picture quality on the Samsung LED sets is not better than a good fluorescent backlit set... they're just thinner. Salesmen have been bull****ting you.

Well I stood in the shop watching the same HD movie on the current LCD TVs and the Samsung LED one, and the quality on the Samsung LED was so good that I decided to buy one 5 years from now. Just bought a 42" LCD so will need to get my money's worth out of it first, but if the LED LCD is anythong to go by the OLED will be amazing 5 years from now.

So you spend R20K now on a small TV and then in 5 years the OLED's juice runs out and forces you to buy a new one. Sounds like a sustainable business just like our car industry :D

I cant afford to spend 20K on a TV every 5 years.

Maybe we'll see some movement after August 30 when the new PM comes. More OLED development then. After the 30th and after Taro Aso.

Just got a plasma and I am not about to fork out loads of dosh just yet to keep up with the Jones'. Besides I like it and gives me the viewing experience I was looking for. So this is just going to wait a bit.

Well, let's say you watch TV for 6 hours per day. That is now from 18:00 till 24:00 every day.
50 000 / 6 = 8 333 days
8 333/365 = 22.8 years!

You forgot about your kids + wife + granny that will be watching your TV non stop :D

What about save you money?

Yip I really believe these manufacturers ultimate goal is to save you money.
Especially by selling you a R50 000 TV so you can save R9.20 on your electricity bill every year...

Plasma and OLED have inferior lifespans. Long live LCD.
I might be getting a 42" LCD before the weekend :p
