Hi Forumites,

I have posted a new laptop for sale on OLX and have had a bite. I'm just a little concerned about what to do. Ill post the correspondence here and you can let me know what you reckon.

Mods, please forgive me if this is in the wrong section, wasn't quite sure where to post something like this.

Hi Veronica,

You can either do an EFT payment, or I could meet you somewhere with the laptop and you can pay cash. I live in Umtentweni on the lower south coast, but I don't mind driving through to Durbs if that is where you are.

Hello friend, Thanks for your mail, i really appreciate your mail. I want to buy this item for my daughter and i want you to ship this item directly to my daughter who is currently on an agricultural project in Nigeria she was posted there some months ago. I want this package to be her birthday gift. I am an American citizen but i am currently in Malta for a business purpose. My friend told me about OLX that it is easy to buy and ship world wide, so I will be making the payment via bank transfer. All I need now are this information to enable me make the payment as soon as possible. I will really appreciate it if you can send the gift to my daughter with South Africa postal service(www.postoffice.co.za) because my daughter's birthday is fast approaching and i want her to receive this gift before her birthday.

1. Bank information ...
2. Transport cost to my daughter in Nigeria ....
3. Total cost .

I await your your quick response so I can make my payment for you to send it to my daughter.

Sincerely,
Veronica.

Sooooooo, what do you think, should I send my bank details and hope for the best?

Im also a bit concerned about the email addresses, so far she has used 3 different email addresses...

facepalm

anyone I don't know from a bar of soap that calls me friend already gets the alarm bells going...never mind the rest of the crap in that email you received.

Wow, shot for quick response, no need to be an *** though.

Maybe, but seriously, anyone considering Veronica's responses as even remotely legitimate must either be very young and naive or very far left on the normalised distribution curve for IQ. :)

Funny enough she has also bought a few things from me, still waiting for the payments though but she assures me that she will make them soon.

Right, thanks again, no need to be an *** though. :)

Let her pay first and then post it?

Its almost word for word the same, (including the studying daughter story), to many other such scams. I wouldnt even give them my banking details.

What is the endgame here? i mean what can she do with his banking details ?? identity fraud??,
in other words what i want to know is how will this play out if he gives his banking details to her to make the payment....
(and lets assume OP is smart enough not to post the item to her without receiving payment first)

There was a similar thread about two weeks ago. They pay the money in ,7days later the cheque bounces ,item is shipped and all you can do is kick yourself.

On Gumtree I had a couple of similar responses when I sold my Wii ,I just took it ,nobody would buy second hand electronics without testing first.Rule of thumb if you don't know them ,cold hard cash. And go to a public place with lots of people around.;)
