Did the world boycott the Munich Games, all those years ago when Hitler was around? IIRC no. Besides would there not be HUGE financial implications?
You mean Berlin, not Munich.
Alan, my sympathies are with the athletes - a boycott uses them as pawns in a situation in which they have no control or agency.
The IOC shouldn't have awarded the games to China in the first place. To boycott them now would punish the athletes, not the Chinese govt.
I talking about the athletes. They should be the ones boycotting it. Now that China has the Olympics having nations boycotting it would cause all kinds of trouble. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
You're right it's the athletes choice.
Clearly you've never been a competitive athlete. Because if you were, you would know that athletes eat, sleep, breathe and live for the Olympics. As long as their safety is guaranteed they'll compete anywhere. Athletes are not politicians.
So, in all honesty, should a boycott of some type happen against the games there? And if so, what type?
My thoughts - Yes. Tourist boycott of games with some countries not participating. And some economic sanctions, although they would more be a slap in the face than actually hurtful to the country.

"On the contrary, it is penalizing innocent athletes and it is stopping the organization from something that definitely is worthwhile organizing."
Back on topic ...
An athletes muscles needs a lot of oxygen in a competition like this. The smog is not going to help them going for record breaking times. I won't be surprised if we don't get any record breaking speeds during the Olympics.
Antarctica might be a prime spot for the Olympics in a few years, the way ice is melting in any case.
KEEP POLITICS OUT OF SPORT
I was just thinking, the Olympics are in China this year and there has been lots of news about how they are building this and that for the games.
Than came the story about the athlete who is not going to compete because of pollution levels.
And Brits not being allowed to comment on Human rights there.
Than there is that little Tibet issue that has been boiling over in the past few days.

I wonder what the IOC were thinking when they selected china. Probably nothing.![]()
