One for the WiFi Geniuses!! PLEASE HELP?????

Im sure this is quite easy, but being new to the WiFi networking scene, im still learning.

My Setup:

Currently i have an iBurst Desktop Modem connected to a Netgear Wifi router. this currently sends a Wireless network through my house nicely. :D

Now, my brother stays in the complex next door to me which is about 150 - 200meters away. so there is ALMOST a line of site.. a few trees etc.

My intention is to send my iBurst Signal through a WiFi network to him. How would i do this?

My thoughts were Getting 2 Yagi antennas and transmitting that way, but houw would i connect this to my existing Netgear router?

Please help?:confused:

You would need to load custom firmware.
Start off by reading about OpenWRT - I am not sure the netgear is supported.
You can do this easily enough with a bit of tech knowledge, two yagis, and two linksys wrt54GL 's

Once you have read about OpenWRT, post again!

Would it be a better option to use the Linksys wrt54GL routers? instead of the netgear router?

Yes.

However, I aaid what I said because you have the netgear, and it *may* work - that site has a list of compatible routers.
JAWUG (search on this forum for that term) uses those a lot - I have two at my house.
Works wonders!
 
ok, so if i purchase 2 x wrt54GL Routers, and 2 Yagi Antennas (Where would be the best place to buy them?), how would i connect the iBurst Modem to that setup?

My apologies if my questions come across as stupid :confused:

No need to apologise - happy to help!

How is your iburst currently set up? Is it a IBurst ethernet jobbie, or a USB?
 
OK ethernet one is easy. :D


You simply plug the one wrt into it, tell the wrt that that is the fefault internet gateway, and you are done.

OK - it is a *bit* trickier, but it is easy enough.
The USB one is a problem - doable, but ugly.

i connect the ethernet iBurst modem to the Linksys router... That would give me wirless signal in my place...

at the back of the Linksys there are 4 network ports.. can i plug the Yagi in there, to transmit to the other yagi thats 200m away?

Off topic, would a Yagi be the best thing to use in this setup? Whats the range of a Yagi?

You screw off the default antenna, and attach the yagi there with a special cable. Cable costs about R150. Basically, the cable has a "plug" on one end for the yagi, and a plug on the other to the linksys.

Why don't you try positioning your netgear as close as possible to line of sight to your boet's place, then get him a netgear WG111T usb dongle. Also try and get a bigger dipole antenna for your router.

I can pick up towers'signals from about 4km away with my WG111T on my laptop. That's with good LOS though.

All this would cost you around R500 if you dont need to run a lot of extra cable to reposition you router.

Might be worth a try.
 
the USB dongle will receive the signal but may not transmit a strong enough signal back.

The iburst modem should be connected to the "internet" port at the back of the WRT.

What im probably going to do is get 2 Yagis, and 2 Linksys Routers and see if i can get that working...

one of each to start is fine.
Get one, and see if, when you stand on your house roof, your brother can scan it with a dongle.
As said before, he will most likely be able to "scan it", but not transmit to it.

Software to use on Windows: NetStumble. I have not scanned from Linux (I use a dedicated PC router with Mikrotik Router OS), but I believe Kismet is a popular scanning tool.
