Howzit.

So here is the situation: I have a 192k line, an IS 3 gig/uncapped account and do a lot of downloading from local torrents. I get between 20 and 25kb/sec down during the day and between 30 and 34 at night and on the weekend.

BUT with all the torrenting my browsing suffers a lot of lag. What i want to do is purchase a 3 gig account from cybersmart for 100 bucks a month and use it on a 2nd PC just for browsing, leaving my original PC just torrenting day and night.

I have a four port modem/router which i would run the two machines off. What i want to know is what kind of speeds can i expect off the two machines considering that they will both be coming off the one 192k line?
Will it be exactly half to each account? Like 15k down on each PC? Or will it be better than that? Do i have any control over allocation of speed between accounts?

Is there anyone out there that has this setup already? Can anyone give me any feedback?

All help much appreciated. :)

as far as I know, it's only possible to run one account on one line at a time.

so, to do what you want, you'd need to get a 2nd line

Your 192K line is running at capacity.

Just upgrade your ADSL connection to 384K or 512K, limit the bandwidth for torrents to 80% of the total line maximum, and the rest would be more than enough for browsing/email.

The way this would be done would be to set your router into Bridged mode (causing it to act as a dumb modem - ie. it does not handle the PPPoE connectivity internally). You would then run PPPoE software such as RASPPPoE on your machines which will then actually "dial-in" themselves using the modem that you now have. That way you can have numerous PPPoE sessions off of one line.

However, this does not mean that you have 192K * the amount of sessions you have open. That 192K gets shared amongst all the open connections, meaning that from a performance perspective you are not likely to see much of an improvement without an actual line upgrade. Using multiple PPPoE connections is a better idea for if you have a shaped and unshaped account (for example), you can then set one connection to the shaped one, one to the unshaped one, and then set up routing tables to indicate which connection a specific IP address goes to (so for example you could make it so that specific game server IP's go over the unshaped account, while everything else makes use of the cheaper, though slower shaped account).

This may sound stupid, but have you checked your MTU settings?
Follow these steps (read the first paragraph first) You don't have to follow the steps.

Scroll down and download drTCP also.

Also google dsl speed and download the program, set your mtu automatically. I bashed adsl for having **** browsing speed, I recenly clean reinstalled xp and forgot to change my mtu settings, now browsing is back to normal.

thanks for all the feedback so far guys!

been out till now so am only getting round to triying out the suggestions now...

Anyone here with openweb?

What is with this whole international browsing after cap? Is it good? Fast? Cos then i wouldnt even need a second account or any of this hassle...

Openbrowse in my experience has been really good and sometimes bad. Sometimes the proxy doesn't work but the issue is always resolved and am always back up and running. I haven't seen anyone really mention that openbrowse is bad so it can only be good. Almost a well kept secret.

OpenBrowse is a local proxy service, either 128 or 192 which u can use to surf international sites after your int cap is reached. IMO, its really good

Well this seems to be the solution to my capped browsing problems then :) will get myself an account for next month i think.
