One man can make a difference

Loss before tax was reduced from R1.112 billion in 2016 to R959 million in 2017.

Yikes. Still a hell of a way to go. I honestly don't see what the point of trying to salvage the dinosaur is. There is just no future in moving bits of paper long distance.

Impressive start, hopefully he can take it from strength to strength.

I am in full support of well run state owned companies and will be even more impressed if he can get to the point where they can stand on their own and not raid public resources to stay afloat.

Nah, there's longevity in this. The US, arguably far in advance of us technologically and infrastructurally, makes good use of their postal system.

Obviously things are going digital, but people will always be sending physical goods from A to B, and I would rather pay postal rates then courier rates, if the postal service is up to scratch.

Glad to see he is making a difference. There is a long way to go - but its progress, we cant say the same for our other SOE's

Let me know when you figure out how to e-mail computer parts.

We used SAPO as a business to ship parcels cheaply. It was reliable as heck, and if you didn't mind the extra 1-2 day wait, the saving on shipping costs was significant. For eg. JHB to CPT 4 days, vs 2 days with courier.

However, things started going downhill about 3 years ago, and we pulled SAPO off as a shipping alternative. The biggest factor is that SAPO covers the entire country cheaply. If you compare shipping from big city to big city, the difference in courier to SAPO is negligible. However, when you compare dorpies on the outskirts, the difference is MASSIVE.

hate to be obvious here, but watch what happens when they find a "cadre" to replace him....

That is what I thought as well. He will bring the SAPO to the brink of profitability and lay the ground work, then a cadre will replace him and reap the rewards. Even if that isn't what happens, the biggest challenge he is going to face is not turning the SAPO around, but keeping the greedy ANC paws out of the cookie jar should it become profitable.

Can't say that there has been any difference for me, in fact I have had more parcels stolen this year than last year.

Couriers are more accountable than SAPO staff.

I imagine that is what Mark Barnes is trying to turn around. Make the SAPO as accountable and "trustworthy" as a courier company. Even if you ignore the exorbitant prices that courier companies charge for international shipments, often overseas suppliers only offer standard postal service. Many times I have ordered from China and only had the option of shipping via standard postal services. Everything works fantastically and I can track the order until it arrives in SA. Then it becomes a black box of information and I have no idea if I'm ever even going to see the package.

I think just providing transparency on package processing and fixing their tracking system would go a long way to instilling trust in the SAPO again. At least then if I haven't received the parcel after X weeks I can see where it last was and query why it is not moving.

Made boggerall difference at the ONLY side that matters(to me).

Still : Long slooooooooooooooooooow queues
Still : Never more than 1/2 counters open (out of avg 5/6 available)
Still : Not working outside of Banking hours - useless.

So basically ZERO customer experience improvement. Sorry Mr. Barnes - go home and enjoy retirement - you are wasting your time.

Cadres will fire him once he starts kicking some ass.

Was just thinking that as I read it... so when will he be fired and replaced, going to start making others look bad. Can't have that, everyone needs to be the same level of incompetent nowadays

Biggest load of nonsense I have read today. He has not turned around s**t! His staff is still incompetent, they can still not deliver a simple letter. The Post Office should be privatized.

This is exactly where they have the niche in the market and it's a huge strategic advantage. If they can prove to be reliable they will be the preferred supplier because most companies would rather consolidate all transactions to one supplier.
