One needs a better soundbar..

Yap. Q800a atmos effect will
Be crap in that space. I think you would need a proper surround atmos system with down-facing ceiling speakers for that room.

I'm guessing here.. The 550w on the JBL's will be pumping load enough clearly without distortion to fill that size room?
 
Is space an issue? How about an av amp, 2 tower speakers, center speaker and active sub?

I finally got my replacement for my LG SL7Y (3.1) which broke earlier this year. Store gave me credit and I got the SP8YA (3.1.2) two weeks ago as I have been waiting for the 2021 models to come in.

Must say, I am definitely hearing the difference for Atmos, but you need to be directed infront of bar to hear it. I also find putting on the Cinema 3D sound mode gives a nice virtual surround experience for standard 5.1 audio by utlizing the full 3.1.2 set of speakers.

Also, it has both Airplay and Chromecast support so my wife and I can both stream to it directly without the need for BT pairing.

Got the SN11R.

Would have liked to wait for 2021 models but the only major feature for me was Airplay and I have an Apple TV attached to it anyway and a few HomePods around the house so I never use that anyway.

Of course it was 40% off and Monopoly money which makes all the difference.

I had my sights set on the Sony HT-A9 hoping it would land here by the end of the year but the deal was too good to let slide.

As long as I’m in the square of the four speakers the bubble is well sorted and besides unlikely to ever use it while sitting outside of that.

The projected vertical speakers are always going to be a compromise, but it’s kind of a non-event unless you ever planned to actually install ceiling speakers which very few people will ever do.

The crazy part is that my old (front) speakers are still on the walls about a metre from the furthest reaches of the sound and it has caught out a number of people now putting their ears right up to those and then looking at me very confused when they realise the sound wasn’t coming from there.

The bubble of sound is truly the astonishing and it takes some getting used to realising there is no actual channel separation and panning making things sound very different.

It’s for that very reason I wouldn’t buy just a 5.1 setup now if there is an Atmos option available, even if it’s all virtualised.

Atmos for music is something that has really surprised me. I’ve had it on my AirPods Pro for a while now and sure it’s cool but not amazing.

Home Theatre though it’s a whole new ball game. Some excellent Queen remasters in Atmos and even WAP is now worth listening to.

Heh?

Ceiling speakers relate to the ceiling height, not the size of the room.

And everything else can be sorted out with volume levels and calibration.

For room filling power I very much doubt anyone would need to run either of them past 50%.

How loudly do you actually plan to use it 90% of the time?

The reason I ask is that all these systems are overpowered for marketing bullshit reasons and therefore don’t actually sound all that good at lower volumes. Not as in they sound bad, but rather that they only really come alive and higher volumes when the amplifiers are put to work.

My LG for instance would have been better for it with 200w less so that I could run it at higher power at night time when I use it most often and the kids are sleeping.

Now I only really experience it properly with the odd home alone gap in between, or during daylight hours.

It also means the differences in volume for a single digit adjustment is quite large and I often find a .5 or a large scale would have been nice.

When I test the the older Q8 soundbar, which is 3.1.2, it did not convert the 5.1... the surround sound just would not play....

But perhaps the tech has improved..

Is it connected via ARC? Then the TV is likely the problem.

Dolby Atmos is backwards compatible with Dolby Digital it should not be an issue.
 
So got the JBL 5.1

My word, this thing rumbles the house. Windows shake and doors rattle. Had to shift the bass down a tad bit.

For acoustics, very clear! It’s currently playing at level 20 volume setting and it’s damn loud. You can hear it throughout the whole house bass and vocals..

Yebo.. Tested a Samsung Q80r Soundbar with a Samsung Q6 TV...

Quite likely where the problem comes in.

Setting on the TV re-encoding it incorrectly or not at all. Or the TV doesn’t support it for whatever reason.

Always better to plug your playing device directly into the sound bar.

Have similar issues when passing Xbox and Apple TV through my TV instead of directly into the sound bar.
 
Spend a bit more and get this:


MyUS or Aramex Global Shopper would deliver as they won't ship direct to SA.
