I have just been told by Standard Bank (after I wanted to download their banking app on a new Lumia phone - and it would not install) that they will no longer support phone banking on any Microsoft mobile instrument. I was told - by a technical dept dude - if I want to use a Standard Bank banking app, I must buy Android or Apple.
I am a Windows user and like the idea of the Win 10 integrated platform. I post this here because I could not reach ANY Microsoft person to ask about this...
Talking about either suicide or dumb techies....

I know extreme, but Move banks. Im pretty sure FNB supports windows, but i could be wrong.

Yes, FNB and ABSA have WinPhone 8.1 apps. And they are both working on Universal apps which will run on Windows 10 on both desktops and mobiles/tablets.

I'd be surprised if the other banks don't have plans for a Universal Windows Platform app as it gives them one app for both Windows 10 desktops and Windows 10 mobile devices.

My bank doesn't have a Windows Phone (8.1) app, but the Android app is lousy - their website is better and easier to use on a phone than their Android app.

You can still use the browser on your phone.

I guess the reason for them not having a Windows phone app would be because so few customers use the windows phone app to justify the development and maintenance for them

A bank that has international ambitions and is obscenely rich cannot hire a coder that can write/adapt an app? They HAD an app that worked till just now. They have now killed their app THAT WAS WORKING on Win 10.
Or - Win 10 is obviously being developed to be a universal o/s across all windows instruments. So - if SB has made the decision not to support Windows 10... How long before it is full of holes or not functioning on my PC as well?
I am their client. I give them my money. They ask me to do phone banking TO SUIT THEM.
Windows - like it or not - dominates the personal computer space overwhelmingly... The arithmetic is obvious.
Plus - I just checked: FNB has an app for Win 10 Mobile that looks very usable, the branch (FNB) have CHAIRS to sit on in the queue (SOFT chairs!) and when I downloaded the FNB app, I saw it even has a function called "Move to FNB" or something like that. I filled that part in quickly. Now let's see how responsive they actually are...
**** Standard Bank. Sick of their ****. And their long queues with less than half the stations manned and the fascist bank officials ignoring the suckers in the queue...

Hate to disappoint you

And yes, it is a demand issue. If there are not enough users to justify the development expense, then it becomes economically infeasible to continue to offer the app. Keep in mind that there are salaries for each developer, a test team to ensure that the app functions correctly, 3rd party penetration/security testing, etc, etc, etc.

FNB and Absa and Nedbank have the developers.... On my way there anyway.

"Although FNB said it has no intention of removing the apps from these platforms’ respective app stores" Standard Stank just killed the app. It does not work anymore. They did not even have the decency to announce anything. The app just goes into dead call for an authorization code that does not exist. The bank's call centre denied everything and after some silly referring to the phone's setup where one purportedly could "get the code" they eventually confessed. So I cannot do mobile banking anymore. I sure as hell am not going to buy a new phone cause some Asperger nerd at the bank made a decision. And I will skrew Standard whenever and wherever i get the chance. I may never get the chance, but if I do... will. Smiling.

I guess this only applies to new installs.

Just checked and still working on my Lumia 1520 running windows 10.

Only have my Bond with them and only reason I have the app. Everything else with FNB.

It's a misleading report, previously discussed on MyBB.

Yes, FNB is doing no further development for Windows Phone. "Windows Phone"(capital P) is a particular platform that ended with Version 8.1. Microsoft does not release anything on Windows Phone (8.1), because Microsoft is now doing Windows 10 Mobile.

FNB did not say they are ending development and support for Windows phones (lowercase p), or Windows tablets.

Yes, the Microsoft names are perhaps confusing or even misleading. The market is hugely confused by the differences between Windows Phone (no longer sold) and Windows phones (very much current).

Bank of America (largest US commercial bank) had exactly the same issue. In March 2015 the media reports were that Bank of America "flips the killswitch" on its Windows mobile apps. "Bank of America to end support for its Windows Phone app in early March" says this 28 January 2016 report.

But on 28 March 2016 Bank of America announced their new Windows 10 Mobile app, a Universal app that runs on Windows 10 phones, tablets and also Windows 10 desktops. Their new Windows 10 mobile (for Windows phones) is now available. Here it is on their own website.

I wouldn't be surprise the same confusion is happing locally.

I like that you want to get that technical about it...but I fear FNB were not being that technical when they announced it.

There is no development for the Windows 10 platform from FNB.

Perhaps you're right. Who knows? Maybe they don't even know?

Still, I think the chance of them doing a UWP app (which also runs on Windows mobile devices) at some stage is higher rather than lower, even if they don't know it yet. :)

In the meantime, their FNB app runs fine on my Windows Phone 8.1 (Lumia 1520) and Windows 10 Mobile (Lumia 950 XL) systems, and their FNB Banking App is also available for desktops in the Store.

Over time, I expect most of these banking apps to migrate to the Universal Windows Platform as Windows 10 adoption grows.

Yeah there is always a chance in the future that they might take it up again.
