You obv prefer the "un-hdr" one right?
I don't attribute the surrealistic look to HDR. I do prefer the first one if that helps.

HDR is the rave right now, and I love some of the images I've seen online, but also not all of them.

Sure, it comes down to personal taste, if everyones shots look exactly the same, it would be pretty boring
Personally I don't like any tool being used to the extreme. This applies to sharpening, noise reduction, focus stacking, vibrance enhancing etc. I use those things when necessary, but I just prefer to not use them such that the photo looks unrealistic. I do admit to, for a period, pushing the vibrance higher than it should have been

HDR also helps to bring out all of the shadows and highlights. It just enhances the image.

Yes, but not ALSO, that is the intended use of HDR. The plastic/embossed/glowing look is ALSO brought out by HDR
The dynamic range (ie, how well the photographic medium can represent both dark and light areas in the same shot) of digital sensors is just not yet on the level of film - so moderate HDR is perfect to increase the dynamic range and result in a realistic shot (ie how a human would have perceived the scene).
But all of the canon DSRLs offer AEB.
What I'm saying is that not all of the nikon's offer AEB. AFAIK the D40 didn't nor does the D3000.
In general though if you want to do HDR then it's good to have enough of a spread to cover the dynamic range adequately. I've used a tethered netbook in the past for 11 or 13 just because I could.

what did you tether it with?
I'm pretty sure it was DSLR Remote Pro.

Are you too lazy to manually up and down the shutter speed while doing HDR? I know its easier to just let the camera do it for you automatically but it cant be too much of a hassle to plonk your camera on a tripod and do it yourself?
