I'm busy setting up an online shop and was wondering what the preferred method of online payments are?

Personally I prefer using my credit card through PayPal. How do you guys feel about buying online through PayPal?

Other options are working with a gateway like MyGate or PayFast (also does instant EFT).

Any suggestions please?

Go with Payfast. A number of online stores do not accept credit cards as a payment method due to low margins etc
They normally go with EFT or they open bank accounts with all the major banks.

Although, if you can accommodate the cost of credit cards then go with it for ease of use.

Paypal does have the benefit of instilling confidence in the shopper though.

To our clients we always recommend Payfast as its best to start out with After enough sales is made then go for something like Netcash or mygate.

For smaller accounts I'd prefer CC without AVS (virtual CC) or Paypal as a second alternative. Bitcoin for things like VPN.

Payfast - never heard of it. Don't want to register another random payment thingy. Anyone not supporting CC or paypal can get lost imo. For sub 2k amounts I'll let EFT slide too depending on reputation.

EFT - not all that keen for bigger amounts.

Straight CC - not all that keen. Only steam & virtual CC company gets straight CC details.

If its a hardware shop then its a bit more difficult. My last PC purchase was a 12k EFT...which was quite a leap of faith for me. Now I'd probably put it on straight CC since its a big amount & I've got more confidence in my new bank to cover me if sht goes sideways....if I don't expose CC details regularly.

Just watch out...paypal has a rep for screwing over aspiring businesses by freezing their account randomly.

Out of a user's perspective, I'd recommend PayPal or Sage's Pay Now Gateway.

Both of those also offer amazing APIs. However, Sage/NetCash has other products that may become applicable to your business later on. I've got a friend using NetCash for Debit Orders and he's quite happy with them overall.

Why so many people recommending PayPal? Most non technical people don't even know what PayPal is.

Average man in in the street prefers debit card payments.

wtf is a debit card payment? I know SB has a properietary mechanism linked into kalahari that is debit card driven but aside from that I've never heard of it. credit card, cheque card & eft sure...debit card payment no.

Paypal is super quick and easy for random payments... just a username and password with one "Pay Now" click.

No I don't. I'm a average man in the street.

I've only ever payed with EFT for something I bought online once in my life.
It was a terrible experience: waiting to confirm order, logging into bank website, paying, sending proof of payment, waiting to be cleared.
