Guys,

Since i got an uncapped account, i would like to use the account to store my important files (mostly photos) online somewhere.

Anybody able to recommend some online storage or backup service. Cheaper would be preferable. I reckon 20Gig will be enough space for now.
It will be long term storage.

There are a lot of options out there like you've probably seen. I use Sugarsync for backing up important docs online (and synching some of it in real time to another pc at home). I also back up photos to Sugarsync. Its $50 per year for 30GB storage.
I also bought 20GB of storage from Google which is shared between Gmail and Picasa. I use the bulk of that to back up photos. $5 per year if i remember correctly. This means I have 2 backup sets of my photos.

Register with Windows Live. They have a service called skylive or something of the sort that gives you 30Gb free storage IIRC.

Backblaze - unlimited backup for $5 a month!!
Dropbox - free and paid options, an incredibly useful service.

Yay for unlimited ADSL, mine starts April 1, can't wait!! :D

I used Carbonite for backups, and another service i forgot the name powered by S3. Both are good.

I also use Ubuntu One. Carbonite is best for windows cause of its explorer integration, and it stores only encrypted data on the remote disk.

But as mentioned, there are MANY others.

I've been thinking along similar lines.

Dropbox is best in terms of overall "feel" imo. If you are willing to drop some cash on this then dropbox is what I'd go for.

For cheap, nothing out there can beat MS skydrive @ 25gb free. Upload is very cumbersome though via online interface. I'm currently busy checking out this app to solve that: http://www.gladinet.com/ Look professional so far but can't really judge yet (Its still sync'ing) Max filesize @ 50mb.

Also heard good things about MS live Mesh. Very easy upload apparently, but free is limited to 5GB.

Remember that none of these come with any guarantee...if the cloud dies then your data is gone.

The amazon s3 one i use is JungleDisk. seems to work pretty well and offers disk and in-transit encryption.

+1 on this. I'm also using Jungledisk [which is an easy way of using Amazon S3 storage]. The main thing about Jungledisk is, it "mounts" your cloud storage as a network drive. So you basically have a drive right there with "unlimited" capacity. Because it is mounted like an external hard drive, you can use all your usual apps with it, i.e. if you had a nice sync or backup app between your HD and external HD, can still use it , or you can simply copy stuff etc etc.

I think Jungledisc is about $2 a month and then you pay Amazon for the actual usage. This means instead of paying for say a 20GB account, you actually only pay for what space you use. So if you only use 1GB, then you only pay for 1GB.

Now once you're on the Amazon S3 bandwagon, you'll be able to use all the other cool stuff Amazon have, like hosting websites and files directly from the same space (i.e. you can turn a folder into a http adress for people to access).

I use Microsoft Mesh - http://mesh.com
Prefer it over dropbox because you can sync/exclude multiple folders of different pc's.
Remote control to pc's also works through some company firewalls cause it uses http/https.

Also have a look at AfriHost's MyBackup and Pastel's IronTree... Both are local services...

Just signed up for Live's SkyDrive option... looks pretty useful to me, especially if you have uncapped...

Running out of space? Just create another live account ;) :D:D

Gladinet solves having to use the web interface for uploading/downloading...
