Hey guys, so I thought I would discuss an idea I had and really want your feed back. My idea is simple, I was thinking of making an online store that sells wholesale to the public. Free delivery, Specials< etc?

cool, i've had a simmilar idea. registered a domain 'clickmall.co.za' a while ago. just don't have time right now.

What feedback are you after and how will you differenciate yourself from amazon.com and kalahari.net etc?

Yeah you have to be more specific. Many of us shop online, and we already have so much variety. So what will you bring to the party?

Online stores are easy to set up. Code it yourself or hire a developer and you're done.

Creating a successful onine store is a whole other kettle of fish. At the most basic level there are only 2 skills you need to learn - traffic generation and conversion optimisation.

In reality you need to learn (or hire/partner with people who know) SEO, PPC, sales copy writing, multivariate split testing, sales psychology, media buying, online marketing, email campaigns etc etc etc

PM me if you want some advice - I've got several online stores.

<?php?> - are you going to drop sarky comments on every thread I answer to, or are you planning on contributing anything useful at any point in the future?

Thanks for the great advice :). I seem to have not thought of Kalahari.net when writing this post, but I should of been more specific when I wrote this. So basically I plan too start off with music equipment and related items. The reason for this is because I know the guy that supplies all the music shops here in S.A. He is the agent for top music brands. My prices will be the same as his. So I rate the cheapest of the cheapest.

It is all fine and well to have the cheapest prices... but now you just need the service to back it up. Also remember: KISS!

So KISS based website + domain + payment gateway + goods to sell + fast service + trusting delivery method + place to operate from.... and some marketing?

Ok so this post is turning out well. I am getting alot af feed back. To answer your questions, I'm sorry if I don't answer all. I plan to offer A hassle-free, easy way of shopping, fast, reliable, trusted service and delivery. Many payment options: Cash, card, EFT, U kash, Mimoney, pocit. Regular specials. O, and vouchers when you spend a certain amount of money and depending how often you are on the website. Free delivery(looking into that)/ I am not sure what a KISS based website is, but I would interpret it as- Kool. Inteligent.Simple.Sexy. That is probable wrong, but it was fun trying :D..

You have already made the most common mistake that leads to the failure of most online businesses but starting with the product. You have sourced a product, next you want to create a website and then thirdly you are going to hope customers will find you and buy something. Hope is not a course of action!

What you want to do is find your customers first. You may be able to get the the cheapest prices, but do people actually buy these items online and, if they do, how strong is the competition.

The formula for online success is really very simple.... Do the research, find out what people are actually looking for and then give it to them. (Use software like Marker Samurai to do the research quickly and easily). I've got a site selling anal bleach (yes - really!) I have no personal interest in naught whitening but I found that there were a lot of people searching for it so I created a website, generated trafic and then lastly went and found a product to sell to them. Easy peasy..

I started with the product, to tell people what I am selling. By doing this I am attracting my potential client base. I am sorry, but I can not agree with your method. Basically, you are saying find the clients, get the website up and running( this is now an expense); lastly, get the product. This is the "amazon" method. Customers first, Profit Later. The question I am asking is, what if the product doesn't sell, there is no interest in it. I have just wasted my time and money by setting this up, hoping my product would sell.. My method is simple. By offering the product I am seeing the interest in that product. By doing this I can then start my website, and since I know that I will have a client base. My products will sell.
