Only have a line... how do I gt started?

Hi All

I've just decided to move into a new place, and to my surprise, it has an ADSL line installed.

So here is my question: If the line is there, but nothing else (modem etc), what is the best way to get started? What service provider should I use? I'm quite keen on using it for Xbox Live as well.

MWEB no contract, R199 per month, free modem, 1GB bandwidth with 10GB local access after that. Call 08600 32000. Then start reading these forums, learn how to search them and you will be empowered. Welcome to always on internet.
 
That sounds like a damn good deal. Do I need to pay monthly for the line rental over and above that?
 
Does the line work?? You are going to need to have the adsl portion of the line enabled, you can phone mweb and they can sort you out as mentioned above, line rental is excluded from that amount.

Gary jou Doring, I am glad to hear about the 'soft' local only capping. I need Weeds.

I am just getting ready to jump on MWEB again. I haven't had news server access on any server for 2 days now. Getting a little concerned so early in the month and I am still below 9GB total. MWEB started hijacking my DNS requests and blocking access to Google, managed to get around that by setting a different DNS server.

So I loaded my International token to check PC setup and connected to a news server within 25 minutes. Put back the local only MWEB token and no connection for hours. Swapped tokens again, connected within 30mins. Put back the local only MWEB token and no connection for hours. I can see a little pattern here.

Now how do I get around this one???
 
hmm, that is strange... I can connect to the local news servers fine with my setup.

Are you sure it is not just because the news servers are so overloaded? but as you say, it connects fine when on international.

You can also try the local SA DC++ servers.... PM me.

Best way is to get your own ADSL router and then use ADSL vouchers from Axxess.

Well that's my idea.
 
I spoke to the m-web guys, and they say that the R199 includes line rental. That's a damn good deal. Now I just need to know if a 384 line is good enough for gaming (Xbox and PC), and if there are servers in SA that will make the local cap worth while.
 
Hi guys. Me again. So it turns out that I'll have to pay R400 to get the line re-activated, plus R129 a month for the line from Telkom, plus R200 to mweb every month. This is suddenly beginning to seem pretty expensive. Is 384 sufficient for local play? Is it worth the cash?
 
Cleric, that doesn't sound right, its 199 all inclusive 1GB including line rental

BUT the router is network locked...
 
Telkom tell me that I have to pay them R129 per month for the phone line, and that ADSL line rental is seperate. I'm totally confused.
 
Dmn, that's a shame. Thanks for the help guys. Over R300 a month isn't viable right now.

I will probably only consider it in March once I know what my raise looks like.
But if I know myself, I'll then sign up for XBLive, and maybe even WoW, so this could get very pricey very quickly.
