Only the IMF can now save Brazil

you know it ......

Brics not really full of anything really but failure huh

Coincidence thats BRICS countries rampant growth is all of a sudden stifled?

The balance of world power stood at a cross road which could have resulted in a shift in the next decade or two. It's quite plausible that certain parties didn't want that. This and the Rand downgrade etc have nothing to do with actual value just the fat cats playing with the world economy as usual to keep their own interests ahead.

Hasn't stopped India

So much for BRICS...

Reading what is happening there...
...The government is frozen. The finance ministry has lost the trust of Brazilian investors and global markets in equal measure....
...President Dilma Rousseff is battling impeachment...

Sounds just like SA.

That so-called "rampant growth" was at the price of other important things that were neglected and are now catching up with them. Growth spurts are easy, sustained growth is difficult and takes planning, which requires not having morons running the country - a problem that the majority of the BRICS countries have.

I bet that's what you said when people spoke of the NSA spying on people worldwide.

Don't be naive dude wake up and see reality, how is it that Russia is not enjoying the economic prosperity it was a few years ago?

Simple, the oil price. Then Einstein, put two and two together and realize that it's only as low as it is because Saudi decided to drop it....now think who is Saudi's biggest ally with bases in the country?

Couple that with Russia and China to a small extent getting more pull worldwide(Russia even getting involved military wise in a proxy war in Syria and BRICS moving forward to open their own bank to compete with the World bank and bingo, you now suddenly open your eyes and realize BRICS was/is a threat to the current status quo and certain parties would not like to see that happen so easily.Who those parties are is pretty obvious but I'm not going to spell it out to you because to people who support these parties just pointing out the truth and facts makes you anti-something or the other.

I agree they have their problems that's why I said in a few decades(assuming they sort themselves out). But why wait for the possibility of that happening....rather throw some spanners into the shaky works now and make it fall apart, right?

Your type of reality? No thanks.

Saudi dropped the oil price because fracking became economical at over about $90 per barrel and when given a viable alternative just about everyone would choose not to be reliant on the basket case that is the Middle East.

Saudi needed tohe world to become reliant on oil again.

It's the reality you live in also, you just choose to live it blindly, thinking global politics awareness is a conspiracy theory seems to make you sleep better at night so it's fine if it's too hard for you to contemplate,go ahead and enjoy them blinkers.;)

Fair enough although it's sitting at around a third of that now at just over $33 per barrel.Hardly solely fracking repelling territory.

There are articles out there that say an existing fracking operation can be profitable if oil sits at $25 a barrel. What OPEC is doing by bringing the price down to the $30 price range is aimed at preventing investment in future fracking operations i.e. exploration and setting up new wells which is is too expensive if oil prices are kept that low.

And watch the leftists blame the IMF for imposing austerity measures causing "mass suffering on the poor Brazilians", because you know they are evil neo-liberals.

Yeah man. Left is as bad as right. Sooner people realise this the better. Everything in well considered moderation. Balance.

Life changes too fast to tie yourself to an ideology. You have to be adaptable and responsive.

Conspiracy theories are useless. When life gives you bananas... Or alternatively people can really do whatever they want of course. I'll be sitting pretty with a banana split though.

Finally, another person who sees that BRICS poses a significant threat to the US & partners in terms of economic dominance and are trying to do everything they can to ensure the status quo remains unchanged.

Ever heard the phrase "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"? Provide the evidence, or all you have is another bulls**t conspiracy theory, and lord only knows we have enough of that drivel on this forum.

The ruling party in Brazil has drawn up crisis plans to tap the country’s foreign exchange reserves to fight recession and prevent a surge in unemployment, heightening fears of a populist lurch as the economic crisis deepens.

The plan is in direct conflict with the policies of president Dilma Rousseff and implies a head-on clash between the government and its own political base in the Workers Party (PT), with serious implications for the stability of the currency and Brazil’s debt markets. It came as official data showed Brazil’s economy contracted sharply in 2015 as businesses slashed investment plans and laid off more than 1.5 million workers, setting the stage for what could be the country’s deepest recession on record.Brazil’s gross domestic product shrank 3.8pc in 2015, capped by another steep contraction in the fourth quarter. It was the steepest annual drop for the country’s GDP since 1990, when hyperinflation and debt default blighted the country’s recent return to democracy.Rui Falcão, the PT’s president, personally drafted the crisis document known as the National Emergency Plan. He reportedly has the backing of former president Lula, Luiz Inacio da Silva. It calls for a draw-down on the country’s $371bn foreign reserves to finance a development and jobs fund, as well as demanding a sharp cut in interest rates, a move that would effectively strip the central bank of its independence. The 16 proposals together mark a dramatic shift back to the party’s Marxist roots and a rejection of its free-market concordat over recent years. While investors might be willing to accept use of the reserves to back up a stabilisation policy and radical reform, they would be horrified if it was used to finance a last-ditch populist agenda.

Brazil Petrobras scandal: Police raid former president Lula's home

The former president was being brought in for questioning, reports have said.Mr Lula, who left office in 2011, has denied allegations of corruption. The long-running inquiry, known as Operation Car Wash, is probing accusations of corruption and money laundering at Petrobras.Officials say some 33 search warrants and 11 detention warrants are being carried out. Some 200 federal police agents were deployed in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia.

Mr Lula's house in Sao Bernardo, near Sao Paulo, was raided early on Friday. The headquarters of the former president's institute in Sao Paulo was also a target, as well as addresses linked to one of his sons, Fabio Luis.
One of the lines of inquiry is that construction companies targeted by the operation could have paid for the development of Mr Lula's ranch.Dozens of executives and politicians have been arrested or are under investigation on suspicion of overcharging contracts with Petrobras and using part of the money to pay for bribes.Mr Lula served two terms as president and was succeeded in office by his political protege, Dilma Rousseff.
