Hello everyone,

I have been using ONSPEED for a couple of years with fairly good results. At the end of October, my subscription expired, and soon after wards, I was able to renew.

Now, ONSPEED can not connect to the server. Everything was working fine until my renewal. I contacted ONSPEED support, and after a long e-mail battle they suggested the following:

It seems your ISP has blocked a port used by ONSPEED.We are not aware of it but it may be the case that port 7000 is blocked. ONSPEED uses this port for its communication.

1) Please click on the following link and download Advanced Port Scanner
http://www.tucows.com/preview/371501
2) Install the application.
3) Run Advanced Port Scanner
4) Remove ALL ticks from any of the boxes in the port scanner window
5) Set "Select IP" to 212.100.243.192
6) Set "Select ports range" to 7000 -7000 (we only scan one port)
7) Click SCAN
You should then see "Open ports" and "Closed ports". One of them should contain port 7000.

If you do not get a result it means that your ISP network blocks port 7000 and you will need to talk to the admins and ask if they'd mind opening the port. Unfortunately, in such a case we cannot do anything else from our end.

I ran the port scanner which simply reports Ports (scanned 0 of 1, opened: 0 closed: 0)

Can someone please also check with the port scanner if Vodacom is blocking port 7000? I seriously doubt it, since I tried with MTN also, with the same result.

It just seems ironic that everything was working fine, until I renewed my ONSPEED account....

Thanks!

Onspeed is a scam bro

I used to use Onspeed a couple of years ago when I was still posessed by the dark side and using Windoze on my laptop. I works pretty well actually and can save a reasonable amount of data usage. BUT, we have a saviour in the form of OPERA....TA DA!!!!! Enable turbo mode and it compresses your images and saves a lot of data also. AND ITS FOR MAHALA CHINA! :-)

Give it a go and check if you smaak it bra! :-)

ONSPEED support responded as follows:

If you ISP hasn't blocked the port used by ONSPEED, then it might be the security software blocking access to ONSPEED.

Please check if full access is given to ONSPEED files in your security software. Please check again even if you had already configured it in the past as newer updates might change security settings.

Please go to http://www.onspeed.com/en/help/pc/post_installation.php?id=i and check if your firewall is listed in the Post Installation Help section.

I do not use a firewall, and only Norman Anti Virus. Is there anything else I can do to check if some software on my PC is blocking the ports required by ONSPEED?

We have launched an investigation to the problem with our Core data network department . I will provide feedback.

We did a trace on the firewall and found that the requests are leaving the firewall, but no reply’s from the onspeed server.

I have sent a mail to onspeed to enquiring about any black-listing or routing issue back to us. Will keep you updated.

Thanks VD, just be prepared for some canned replies from them as well as some badly translated ones, for example:

Sorry for the inconvenience, there is a new version which is undergoing testing. It will be released shortly. We will also intimate you on the same as soon as the new version is released.
:D

I got the following reply from ONSPEED:

> Dear Sir / Madam,

> Please try to telnet to port 7000 on one of the servers from a command prompt and see if you can establish an outgoing connection.

> 127.0.0.1:5152
> 127.0.0.1:5405
> 127.0.0.1:50001

I responded with:

C:\>telnet scandium.onspeed.com 7000

Their reply:

Since the telnet failed, port 7000 is still blocked by the ISP. Kindly contact your ISP again and ask them to open port 7000.

The problem seems isolated to your internet provider.

I do not know what to tell them anymore ....

This is the email that we sent to the Administrators , they seem unwilling to assist though.

Hi Rob,

Pls help me here, not sure how the destination network fits together. My subscriber needs to connect to onspeed.com on port 7000 (188.65.183.55) with a source address of 41.192.*.*.

After testing, I can see that my client’s request is leaving my Firewall on port 7000, but no replies are coming from 188.65.183.55. The only feedback from them is to open port 7000 on our devices.

Would it be possible to check if my clients traffic on port 7000 is being sent to 188.65.183.55. You can maybe have a look at the syslog of the firewall neteasy-fw1.tshr.melbourne.co.uk.

I would really appreciate your help, I’m stuck in the middle of this problem. If you are willing to help, I will send you a IP address to can run a capture on.

Your help with this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Below is Robs reply

Hi Wouter,

As far as we’re concerned it should be able to connect. However, the device your talking about is controlled by our customer, and they have their own set of firewall rules on-top of ours. We did block port 7000 outbound at the weekend, which I presume is what your customer is referring to, therefore you performing a telnet inbound is not the same test.

I would suggest you allow your customer to come back to you once they’ve had chance to test everything, and it should work fine.

Thanks,

Rob

Hello VodacomData

Thanks for the help and reply.

I fired off a few e-mails to ONSPEED "support" with the following responses:

> We do understand your concern. However, ONSPEED does not block any IP
> address or IP address range.
>
> The issue is at your ISP end and we already asked them to open high
> number ports (eg 7000).
>
> Please ask them to investigate this issue as many of their customers are
> experiencing this issue.

and

> Please ask the ISP to check if they are able to connect to "188.65.183.52" via port 7000.

I ran a ping on the mentioned address:
Code:
C:\>ping 188.65.183.52

Pinging 188.65.183.52 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 188.65.183.52: bytes=32 time=722ms TTL=52
Reply from 188.65.183.52: bytes=32 time=449ms TTL=52
Reply from 188.65.183.52: bytes=32 time=1093ms TTL=52
Reply from 188.65.183.52: bytes=32 time=460ms TTL=52

Ping statistics for 188.65.183.52:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 449ms, Maximum = 1093ms, Average = 681ms

But a telnet still produces: C:\>telnet 188.65.183.52 7000 Connecting To 188.65.183.52...Could not open connection to the host, on port 7000: Connect failed

Now I am wondering who are the > ... many of their customers are experiencing this issue.
