Hi all
I'm soon getting fibre, I must now decide where to install the ONT etc.

As far as I understand the ONT must be installed in my house close to a electricity point, a ethernet cable then runs from the ONT to my Wifi router.

Will you say it's better to have the ONT and router close to each other with a short 1m ethernet cable run, or won't it really matter if the cable run from the ONT to my wifi router is 20m plus?

If needed I can place a router quite close to the ONT and then run a network cable from that router to my main wifi router elsewhere in the house.

Having the ONT and router far from each other will complicate things in terms of backup power during load shedding, but I don't really want to install the ONT in the center of my house where the Wifi router is currently located, my thinking is to hide the ONT in a little corner and then run ethernet cable to the Wifi router/s.

Also, will introducing long ethernet cable runs increase the lightning risk? I'm so used to not even worrying about lightning with fixed LTE, I can't even remember when last I plugged out a modem / router like in the old ADSL days.

Hi,

As long as you stay within cable length for CAT5e or higher then there will be no issue with that. You can run the ethernet cable to where you want the router to be placed and that would not be an issue.

With Vumatel Complexes they sometimes install the CPE or ONT in the garage and then the client has to run an ethernet cable to where they want to place the router.

In terms of lightning the risk is the same as it was before with a possible lightning strike that hits the electricity but as for the actual fibre line it does not conduct electricity like copper.
