GigaHUB 813G or GigaCentre 844GE? I assume the latter is better, but when do I need it? Is it overkill for most uses?

that depends on what you want to use it for, and what speed your service is
1) Both units are basically the same 4 X GE and 2 X POTS, so if you are going to physically connect to the ONT there is no difference
2) If you have a <50meg service the 813 would do form a wifi point of view, (depending on ONT location, and house construction)
3) If you have a >50meg service and or you have lots of devices such as iPhones etc with 5G WiFi the 844 could be better, the 5G spectrum has a lot less interference than the 2.4G spectrum used in the 813 (and the majority of WiFi routers)

I have signed up for 10meg fibre line with FireStream, what ONT should I expect to get? This is in Kyalami Estates under Metrofibre Networks.

Firestream are a Opens access ISP, and I understand that they would provide there own Router, MFN will provide a openaccess ONT that has a single Ethernet port and is configured as layer 2 only. So you would need to ask them,

What router did firestream deliver

Hi,
I haven't heard anything from either the ISP or Metrofibre. I took the initiative to call Metrofibre only to be told they'd call me back, including this afternoon. Emails also go unanswered.

On the 25th of October a guy rocked up at my doorstep unannounced to do measurements and I haven't heard anything back since.

I'm not sure what the turnaround times are from the date they get my request so I'm waiting patiently. Any suggestions on getting the information I need?

You should check with Firestream they should be liaising with metrofibre on this I assume that both technicians would need to be onsite at the same time ie. tech from firestream and tech from metrofibre inorder to ensure swop out works

The guys from Metrofiber came and did the installation on Friday afternoon and the installed the Calix 801G ONT.

Someone from FireStream will be bring a MikroTik RB9412nD hAP lite. I might use my own router if it is possible.

when you get the Mikrotik, let us know what the WiFi is like, I looked at the specs and saw the RJ45 ports are only Fast Ethernet/100meg, do you know if they offer a higher spec model for faster services

My thoughts on the Calix 812G GigaHub.

WIFI range is about the same as my TP Link W8968. So pretty good.
Seems to be a reasonably stable device. I've only managed to hang it once when torrenting over WIFI.
Rebooting takes >5 minutes :wtf:
Configuration and diagnostics are EXTREMELY limited. It either got a green light or a red light or no light, don't expect to find more info from the UI.
Wall mountable.

All in all, it's simple, and it works. Don't expect it to do anything beyond that.

Hi Naplam, don't mean to correct you but the 813 has the wifi and not the 812, don't know exactly what you want to do but I can set, QOS port forwarding and such like on mine. But I have no specialised requirements

My understanding is that most routers are Calix. With MFN we installed the 813G (some pics here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...e-my-experience-and-final-win-with-MetroFibre). The reboot of the device takes max 2 min until service is up (feels like eternity). It has all the basics (DMZ, QoS, Firewall). It lacks any statistics / reporting (i.e. I have no clue what throughput is on the device).

The 813G is solid. Does not run very hot. I did find that their firewall is "weird": With my previous VDSL installation I could have a PS4 connect wirelessly and then join a PvP match on the wired PS4Pro. This stopped working when I switched to the 813G and I had to wire the PS4 into the same switch as the PS4Pro (the PS4Pro is connected to a giga-switch which is connected to the router - I could not get it working by wiring the PS4 into the 813G).

The ONT is also remote managed when it comes to firmware and lacks detailed diagnostics and reporting. Even the firewall log files are always empty - will try some intrusion attempts over the weekend to actually see if it works. QoS config and complexity bothers me - there is no explanation how it works but it is based on DSCP (https://www.calix.com/content/calix...an/eap-r24/index.htm?toc6943796.htm?62186.htm).

The router also lacks VPN capabilities and you will need to run VPN behind it.

Are you saying you could not join on player or join a PVP match?

Both: Matchmaking for PVP partially worked - i.e. in a 6v6 match the PS4 connected via wireless did not match a full team. Joining on a player did not work at all via wireless. Network showed NAT2. Even switched firewall completely off to rule out any issues there. I do think that this issue is only specific to Destiny though (there are other reports of people not being able to join on players on the same LAN).

I rewired the 2nd PS4 now properly and there are no issues.

OK I hope I don't have such an issue

Whats your ID on Destiny

Same as forum handle here. As said: This was only an issue where the PS4Pro was connected wired to a switch which connected to the Calix and the 2nd PS4 connected to the Calix wirelessly or wired directly. All the switches I use are Linksys unmanaged Gigabit switches so I doubt that they would interfere.

Hi guys, The ISP im going with on MFN is giving us the option to select GigaHUB or Centre, Is there a price difference if you select the centre? There is a once off R570 charge for the device on month to month and free on 12 month contract. The site doesn't mention anything else.
Should i just select the centre assuming its the better device?

Get the 813G - WiFi is rubbish and the device in general is bad - read my comments on the Calix 813G. Do not pick the ONT2 option which costs R100/pm just so that you get 5Ghz. You will get much better WiFi by just buying any other Wifi AP.

Be a true PITA and ask them: "Why can't you give me a 803G which I can then use with my existing router and do a simple PPPoE connection?" <--- That is actually what they should be offering as all other devices from Calix are expensive and can barely compete with Trendnets.
