Hi Guys,

I have got an Opel Astra 2001 model. When I drive it sometimes shows the coolant light. This happens after driving for a long time or when my engine is hot. Also bear in mind that when this light comes out my temperature gauge will be normal. This has been happening for the past three weeks. Is there anyone who can tell the cause of this coolant light?

Thanks

Check the connector that leads to the coolant reservoir. Maybe unplug it and clean it, a quick way is to spray it with deodorant or any aerosol. That should fix your problem.

My 2001 Astra CS had the connector... but no sensor :( Its the cheap CS entry level model.

If the coolant level is right and the temperature stays on normal then there is no reason why the engine should get damaged. This seems to be a simple electronic misdiagnosis.

Thanks for all your advises guys... I have done all what you suggested but the coolant warning light still appears. I think the best thing is to take this car to GM to be diagnosed

It will most likely be a faulty sensor. Don't let them rip you off with the price of a new one though, its better to just have it bypassed and manually check the level, like poor CS drivers like me do :-)

I also read a while back on one of the Vauxhall forums that it could be A/C related. Dealers will be able to tell once they connect it to the Tech II OBD scanner.

I had a similar problem a few weeks back. Turns out it was the coolant flange that needed to be replaced.

Strange enough the service technicians at Audi told me my water pump was leaking, which it wasn't btw. Turns out, you can't even trust the actual dealerships. One would expect them to diagnose properly.

Take it somewhere else for a second opinion.

Opel Astra 2001 coolant warning light

That sounds like a electrical issue. Sensor wire shorting out to somewhere.

I took the car to an electrician. He suspected the coolant control module. He unplugged it and returned it back. That was more than 30 days ago. Since then the coolant warning light has not come back till today. He said the CCM was malfunctioning that's why is showed the coolant warning light. It looks like my radiator fan was taking too long to kick in

Thanks for all your help guys...

Astra's are particularly bad at false warning lights. My Astra shows the ABS light yet he ABS is fine and a mechanic has confirmed this. It also showed the engine light regularly and the cause was the emissions sensor that apparently is a part that fails often in Opel's.

O2 sensors do fail in these cars about every 120,000km and they can cause the check engine light to come on. They are not that hard or expensive to replace. My Astra is nearing 218,000km om the odo and it is not reporting any malfunctions.

My O2 sensor cost me R1500 to replace with the original part which was fairly expensive I felt. There was a Bosch part that was cheaper but the mechanic said that he had a lot of bad experiences with them. In general I am now hating my Astra. It has so many rattles and small irritating issues that I just want to be rid of it. It has 170K on the clock now and it gives me more trouble than my last car did when it was on 300K. I will never buy an Opel again.

You should try some of the newer VWs then. Good luck.

My father just got a newer Golf and I must say it looks very decent. Thing is there is nothing in the VW range that I like for my current price range. Will probably get something Japanese like the Honda Balade.

Those new Ballades are hard to fault and the deals Honda offers on them are very tempting. Can't go wring with them.

The Astra is due for a service in a months or so, at about 220,000km, so I'll see then if I hold on to it for a little longer or spend my bonus on a Corolla or Zafira.
