No it's not. Even if someone can afford to pay R1m for a small car and they have the cash. They should still ask themselves is it worth that.

I like nice cars just as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day it is only a tool. Not a asset and not a status symbol.

Buying a car as a status symbol is a joke, I agree. and anyone who believes its an asset is just as silly. (unless its a potential E type).... But for some its enjoyment, the experience, wether performance, comfort. I had a rented car, and i really didnt like the audio, and the driving dynamics was horrible. but yes, that is me. and yes, most people wouldnt care. In this guys case, he does care about some things. And just because you dont see the point, doesnt mean everyone else should either. Its like trying to convince a gamer they dont need a fast GFX card, or a diner that steak doesnt have a point, you crap it out. Or someone buying a house, why should it have a view, its a waste of money....

Totally agree. Now with all this said the OP could probably make a better more informed decision.

Not everyone uses their small car to run around town, for some it's their main car so I'm pretty sure they would want something pretty decent to sit in for longer trips.

Depends how often you take longer trips. If it's once a year I wouldn't worry about that.

I have nothing against the getz, @rietrot - I think they're fantastic, but they are getting on in years now and you can't always tell if a car has been looked after when it gets to be about that age.

I do A LOT of mileage for work, mostly highway, so something younger and with the option to extend the warranty is a must. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with these engines as I have found a lot of cases in the UK where the engines have lost compression with relatively low mileage.... That being said I did have the Adam (which btw was not a bad choice, it was an awesome little machine and I'd buy it again if I went back in time) and the engine in that car was a pleasure, and I drove it like I stole it too. I only had it about 11 months though.

I am actually looking at a big downgrade with the Corsa, my current vehicle was in the 300k mark, but I've come to realize that I'd like to do other things with my money, and I really want to start getting rid of unnecessary debts such as 1k cell contract, R600 gym contracts and the current 12k per month I spend on cars when I factor in repayments on the one, insurance for both cars and then petrol. I'm barely 24 years old.... I can have nice expensive cars later in life.... I could be investing or going on more holidays instead....

100% with you. I have this argument with my mom because she cannot fathom why I change my car as often as I do or spend as much money on them as I do.... I explain to her, she has her hobbies and her interests, and I have mine, and no I will not be "getting rid of that old beetle" any time soon, I like it and it makes me happy... I don't splurge on anything else in life, clothes, decor, fancy dining, anything like that... So why not let me have a couple of cars I enjoy.

Thanks, was just using that one as an example, if all goes according to my plan, and I can start actually seriously car hunting, then I'll figure out all the spec levels and make my decision. I know the maintenance shouldn't be too expensive... My Adam wasn't bad besides for tyres when I hit a pot hole and needed 2 new 18" low profiles... That was a bit of a shock lol....
 
I saw a 2017 Opel Astras on cars.co.za for R185 000. I'm sure if you look around you can get one that's ~R160 000. It makes more sense to get an Astra than a Corsa if they're about the same price.

Thanks I’ll check them out as well. I have always liked the new Astra. I’m genuinely looking to cut down costs of instalments though.

Would prefer to buy a flat and rent it out or something instead.

Yeah I know. It's a mess... I recently spent 10k on maintenance on the beetle alone (electronic ignition, carb rebuild, heater setup, fuel lines etc)... I could have bought an apartment by now....

Lol, at that age R12k wasnt even my salary gross. But that was a long time ago.
That being said, I also did silly financial things in my early 20's. I was lucky enough to recognise the path it was taking and turned it around without too much drama. So Kudos to the OP for taking steps, recognising the risk. as a reward you should buy yourself an OPC

Anyway, OP, did you finally find something? I see you will not be buying Fords anytime soon that's for sure

i do have an RS, but always thought the corsa OPC is one of the best looking hot supermini's.
