I honestly think these guys are the way forward for Muslims. If any Muslims are sick of Islamaphobia then they need to give these guys more support.

So, yeah. An ultra rare positive Muslim story.

Cape Town – The Open Mosque in Wynberg is preparing to host what it hopes will be the first of many annual Christmas dinners.

The dinner, at 19:00 on Saturday, will be an exceptional event, according to the mosque's president and founder, Dr Taj Hargey.

"It is a token of our appreciation for our Christian brothers and sisters for our relationship with them."

The aim was to foster harmony between Muslims and Christians and to show that the Muslims of Cape Town were not the "same as some from Iraq, or those who were part of terror groups like Isis".

There are a lot of very tolerant religious people out there. Nice to see more interaction & discussions between them.

Remember that these guys are in the minority and that most mainstream Muslims are against them. They have already had their Mosque attacked twice by other "Moderate" Muslims.

They definitely deserve more good press.

Although I don't agree with the idea of the open mosque per se (it could work if done properly) I think this is an excellent initiative to foster brotherly love and unity. It's an excellent time to do it as well.

The dinner was open to everyone.

Hargey, an Oxford University professor, opened the mosque on Lester Road in September 2014 and welcomed women, homosexuals, and non-Muslims to prayers. This resulted in much criticism from traditional Muslims who felt he was violating the tenets of the faith. The mosque was attacked at least twice.

The mind boggles. Their brothers stand with open arms to the world and they choose to throw spears at their brothers. Really sad.

Hargey is not considered muslim. He is allegedly a follower of the Ahmedia cult.

A cult that promotes diversity and cooperation? Disgusting! Ok seriously tho - in what *bad* ways have they differentiated themselves from mainstream Islam?

The vast majority of Muslims cannot cope with the idea of of an open and tolerant Islam so they spread lies and rumours about progressives who want to bring the religion in line with 21st century ideals.

He was vocal in support of the Ahmadi's right to practise their religion in Cape Town in the early 80's - the local Muslims attempted to reduce his credibility by calling him an Ahmadi, but eventually settled for branding him an Ahmadi sympathiser...

I think Muslims in Cape Town have been reasonably tolerant towards this open mosque. Barring the two attacks, which could have been carried out by a few 'radicals' or anyone else for that matter, I don't recall any other major incidents against its existence. If Cape Town Muslims wanted to carry out threats and attacks, I'm sure they would have done so. Doesn't look like the existence of this mosque is an issue to them.

Not sure if you are asking me, but all I know of this person is from what I've read. I've never met, seen or spoken to this person, so I don't know. I don't have an opinion of this person. What he does is his business, not mine, and it's not for me to interfere in his business and beliefs.
