Open View PVR

Just seen an advert for a Starsat HD PVR decoder, PVR function via USB external mass storage device. Game, R399.

This is promising!

Unfortunately my device is a different modelScreenshot_20180725-185251.jpeg

Edit: apparently the DSD1465 will be updated next month.

Does this new software update also enable HD on SABC1 and SABC3?

They couldn't call it a "PVR Dongle" and charge double or triple the price.

Although I can imagine that it has some pre-loaded configuration on it. I guess all we need is for someone to buy one and then let the config files out in the wild for the rest of us to load onto larger capacity USB devices.

The key words in the blurb are "Compatible with selected decoders". In this case Ellies only mentions the NA 9200, which requires a software update before it will work. But 320 minutes is way below enough capacity and that is with the 64 GB dongle.

Technically, no difference but the software config files would be. I suspect that the dongle may even only work on the decoder it is activated on as well. As already stated, a few of us would have to go and get one and start playing around before we will even know the dongles capability.
The spec sheet is basically useless with almost no really useful info.

The questions I already have are:
Is the content recorded in HD?
Is the content viewable on any compatible decoder or only on the decoder it was recorded from?
Can one have more than one dongle activated and usable per decoder?
Why so small?

I'm guessing that would require a software update in Auckland Park

That is quite easy for anyone with a OVHD decoder to verify. Simply check which transponder is in use and what the symbol rate and FEC is.
No sw upgrade needed just another transponder with the HD channels on it worst case.

I was being a little facetious. Does SABC broadcast anything in HD?

DSTV HD (HellknowswhatDefinition) or real HD? Do BetaMax tapes support HD?

The channels went HD in time for the soccer world cup. And the quality was most definitely HD. Certainly not all the content available is HD or good enough to be upscaled/up converted. But quite a few movies shown are HD.

Had mine for two weeks now, works well, but you cannot record SABC channels the articcle in News24 recently was wrong in this regard.
I had to purchase a new decoder as my old one did not have PVR function.
Cost R366.85, PVR memory stick 32 GB R198.99.
I got a "special" direct from supplier deal, so you may pay a few rand more in the retail stores.
According to the technical fundis, a normal usb stick will not work. If you have a PVR compatible decoder already, there is also a software update that must be done.
