Hi Everyone,

I'm considering getting a dish and decoder. I would like to have a decoder with PVR. The only option seem to be DSTV, but openview seem to have better channels than DSTV's R29 per month option. Does the PVR even work with the R29 option?

Everywhere I look on the internet regarding a PVR for openview, I just see PVR coming soon. But those articles was posted more than a year ago. So how soon is soon? I also saw articles that state that space tv's decoder will be upgradable to PVR in the future. Has this materialized yet? If so, can someone tel me how the upgrade work? Do you have to pay for it?

Any other recommendations and advice regarding satellite TV installation would be welcome too.

Thank you.

You would need to pay the PVR/Xtraview cost of R75PM as well to be able to record.
So total of R104 Per month.

Yes, I used this option when I had a PVR and like isie said if you want to use the extra options its gonna cost you an extra R75.

Thanks, didn't realize using the PVR cost extra with DSTV. I wasn't planning on spending an extra R100 per month on TV. What about Open View, is the PVR upgrade that I've read about all over the net available yet and does it also cost monthly? I'm more a once of pay and get it all done with kind of guy.

No idea on Openview sorry :(

Any reason you don't want to go the streaming way. Aka netflix Unotelly

Streaming won't work for me. I'm too far from the exchange and still stuck on 1Meg and even that is not always stable. Actually considering cancelling Telkom line all together and go mobile. But that is off topic. All I want to find out is if there is a way to record and watch programs later on Open View. Even if it isn't recorded in HD. I don't want to record and copy or store it in any way. Just watch it later and delete. Most programs I would be interested in show at inconvenient times.

I've got the SpaceTV decoder and the PVR option has not been enabled as of yet.

To be honest the content is not that vast that you would actually want to record it. If they add more channels in future and possibly increase shows etc. maybe, but not now.

I also thought I would prefer the PVR route and that's why I decided to go for the SpaceTV decoder, but after 3 or 4 months of having the service active my mind has changed. I watch TV. Some movies, then switch to my media player for a few hours. The decoder takes the back seat unfortunately.

Thanks Tera, that is the information I was looking for. Thought as much, just wanted to make sure. For now then I'll go without OVHD and stick to my old school VCR. I hope someone from OVHD read this thread, because if the PVR did work, I would have it installed tomorrow.

As for torrents, sure, but not everything on TV is available as torrents, especially Afrikaans stuff.

Hi
Did you come right with the PVR for Open HD ?
I see it is still marked as "coming soon?
LOL is now being years

I eventually did buy the SpaceTV decoder. Had it now for almost 3 years. During that time it's software got updated once, automatic from the satellite, from V0.7 to V0.8. After the update I did not see any change in operation. Also software is a bit buggy, example when in a menu or program guide, pressing exit sometimes put decoder in standby mode or pressing power button to go to standby don't always respond first time, then you have to press again. So small things, but still annoying. But if you are planning on buying a decoder for openview, don't let the "PVR coming soon" sway you to go for the SpaceTV decoder. I don't believe it will ever happen.

As for recording, I still use my trusted Samsung VCR. Since the source is from the decoder's AV output, the resulting recording is not to bad, way better than recording directly off the air.

OVHD PVR is HAPPENING!

Just found out this week that this is finally happening. The latest batch of decoders are PVR compatible, and they are apparently available at Pepcell, Makro Milnerton also had stock. Don't have much info, but apparently you also have to purchase a dongle to plug into the decoder. The dongles are supposedly going out to the retailers this Friday.
Does seem that older versions of the decoder won't be able to handle this? I found this out via the Facebook page and the local area manager.
Good news for me as my old faithful DVR has decided to retire.

wasn't the initial story they were planning on allowing you to record to a USB flash disk?

That is interesting! Thank you for confirming the rumours. The problem with the earlier decoder versions that were available is that the technologies deployed 4 years ago may no longer be able to support an upgrade to PVR status. The original idea was to provide decoders with an external SATA connection into which you could plug an approved HDD. Wonder if this is still the plan?

Most or all of the decoders have USB ports at the back. I presume this is where one would plug something in.

It is going to be super confusing if all of these USB ports are not usable due to software or whatever.

It will be pretty cool to have this function , but what would this " dongle " cost though ?

Could be right, this could be the "dongle" referred too. But I will wait until next week after the Friday launch date. Not much info about this yet that I am aware of.

: The Decoder Specifications:

There are two OpenView HD decoders on offer, one from Space TV and one from Ellies;

Both have AV, HDMI (Full HD at 1080p) and RF out ports. Both have a USB Port for charging your devices, no PVR functionality though as of yet BUT the Space TV Model will have the ability to record as soon as the new firmware is made available, hopefully by March 2014

----------------------------------

Really , an USB port to charge your devices. Wow...

Now a PVR function looms - watch out Multichoice , things are happening...

I am not seeing anything new on Makro's site regarding OVHD ( and PVR ) yet.
