Location
Pretoria
so, i decide to duck a few minutes early from work. I then decide to take another route home seeing there is a lot of roadworks in the Tshwanetoria (this is/was someone's location in the name field :)) CBD.

i hardly ever smoke in the car, but yesterday i had quick one, so the window was halfway open. the next thing a hand appears through the window and turns of the ignition, obviously shutting off the electric windows. the other "gentleman" then places his forearms on the window, and his hands inside the car, and then produces a knife. he asks me for my cellphone, which i hand over, without trying to make eye contact. he then tells me to drive away and not to try anything. they turned around and the next thing i hear something falling into my car, and when i look there is my phone. someone else "arrested" them as they turned around so the probably threw the phone back, so as not to have evidence against them. i just drove of like white lightning. not gonna bother to go and report this, as they are most probably on some other street corner, doing exactly the same thing.

just goes to show that the warning on cigarette packs that state "SMOKING CAN BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH" is quite true. :-)

That could have ended very differently.. But you should still report it.

This happened to a colleague in Johannesburg about 3 weeks ago. a "homeless" person approached at a robot and held a knife to his throat demanding his wallet and cellphone. Be careful when driving with open windows.

Its a bad idea to smoke in your car anyway but if you do you should leave the window open just a crack.

Then put the cigarette out in your eye !

This type of crime must be reported. If not then there are not relevant stats for it, therefor no extra policing in those hot-spot areas.

agreed. i'll mosey on over to the Pretoria Central PS during lunch quickly

Happens here in CT as well.

Neighbour's wife's passenger window was broken with a spark plug, hand comes through the window and off he goes with her handbag. She says it literally took only two seconds from start to finish

Keep a shank somewhere near your right hand when you drive, like a toothbrush with the end sharpened or similar. It looks inconspicuous and a quick thrust upwards into your assailants face/hands will get them to back off and afford you time to start the engine and drive away.

Vanguard drive is notorious for this...

I had a woman (she was jittery, more than likely on tik) stick her hand in my car to try to grab my cellphone from underneath my nutsack. Did not end well for her. This was on the Okavango bridge.

Why not just a screwdriver?

With the HIV rate I think they will have the last laugh.

One of the guys in our office got splashed in the face with god knows what at the robots c/o R21 and Olifant a few months ago. His entire face went red and was swollen, he nearly wrote off his car trying to get away from the guys.

I'm an advocate for "situational awareness" and when stationary at any intersection I'm always checking my mirrors and around me to see whats going on around my vehicle so that I can avoid or be better prepared for a "surprise". I notice way too many people who are preoccupied with all sorts of crap behind the wheel instead of focusing on whats going on around them and this is when people become victims.

Nevertheless I've made it a habit to make sure my windows are closed when coming to a stop.
