OpenServe issues affecting Jhb South (was incorrectly "Strange CellC Fibre & OpenServe issues")

(Firstly, you can roast me if this is the wrong group to post and then you can roast me for choosing Cell C Fibre ).

40/20 package (got in June)



Over the last few days, for about 4 hours in the morning (this morning included) the ping times are 10 times worse at 43 ms (instead of sub 4 ms) and downloads are an atrocious 1.45 mb/s (instead of 40). The upload speeds have been ok (18 mb/s). So it seems these 4 hour periods of poor performance doesn't affect uploads. The product says no throttling and no shaping.

Has anyone else experienced this? What could cause it? I've phone CellC Fibre "technical" support a few times aleady and have done the full switch off all the modems and disconnect it from power socket (etc) dance with them. Nada.

Suggestions?

Get a test account from an ISP (ADSL one) plug in their details during the period you having issues with Cell C, if issues still persist you know its Openserve problem, if not you go to Cell C with the tests from the test account and show them your fibre is not the issue they are.

Yeah honestly try what Cryptic suggested and test another ISP account, if the issue still persists then you know it's Openserve doing maintenance (which would make sense since it only in the morning).

I'm also on Openserve and twice it slowed down like this, where the download speed went to around 4Mbps but the upload speed was fine, and I'm pretty sure it was due to maintenance both times since no one else on my ISP was reporting issues.

when you having problems also do a few trace routes to some sites that will help determine where the issues are and after that you could also perform IPERF tests.

You could also walk to your neighbour and see if they having problems the same time as you.

If you say sub 4ms like before it means you are in JHB or PTA right. I will bet R100 the issue is not Openserve. Any takers?

Some feedback, guys:

1. The problem is indeed OpenServe. The whole area is affected (took me the whole morning to find the correct OpenServe guy to talk to).

2. Ping times are shyte and downloads are just as horrendous (uploads are screaming for action though on full bandwidth - strange).

3. Cell C Fibre support hasn't replied to any of my requests for feedback - I then began looking for contacts at OpenServe.

4. Logged an "escalated call" through @OpenServeZA - was surprised they responded on the Twitter account anyways.

5. Found out who the OpenServe manager for our area is - chatted to him (nice & relaxed guy) - says the whole area as well as south Joburg is affected. "Only download line is affected. It could either be the exchange or the whole backbone.". No estimated time for fix.

Yeah... Lenasia is affected as well - we are South West of JHB (South of Soweto). My 200mbps Openserve fibre line is crawling at 1-2mbps down, but screaming 96mbps on upload. It started yesterday morning.

Same issue on Openserve irrespective of ISP. I've confirmed with people using Afrihost, Cool Ideas, Cybersmart, WebAfrica and Telkom as their ISP.

Perhaps you should update the thread title. Remove the Cell C reference as all ISPs are affected, and indicate JHB South as the region.

Btw - where about are you?

SpeedTest.net results from the last 2 days, and a few earlier ones, from my 200mbps Afrihost Fibre line:



The last result (13 Nov) is what I usually get. 26 Nov there was a fibre break in the area (thieves vandalised cables, probably hoping to find copper), and then the top part of the table is the last 2 days which have been been terrible.

You are correct. Just got off the phone with a Jacob M from OpenServe (in charge of Gauteng fibre). OpenServe has lost a large download link in Pretoria affecting Mayfair all the way south to Lens! (Only charous targetted! ). The team has somehow patched a 10GB link for *all* of us affected! They are still busy fixing. Dunno how long this will take.

Also, took your advice and retitled the subject (CellC Fibre is innocent in that regard ... but guilty for slow as ... responses to queries).

It came right last night in Lenz after about 9:30 or so, I manage to update COD: MW, but then earlier in the morning it dropped drastically
