Mythbuntu is good - you could try LinuxMCE as well.

Myth has a hoard of features though - you may find that there are too many.

XBMC is excellent. Made a few media systems for friends out of old Intel Shelton motherboards using the Windows version. Just waiting for the work to get Atom ION systems in to try out the Linux version with VDPAU.

Windows Media center is ok, but really likes to have hardware to run it. Hardware = watts. Sort of kills the idea of the HTPC being more appliance like when you get the nice electricity bill.

mythbuntu is good. to be honest the "easiest and cleanest" media center ive used was on Windows. but im pretty sure one you get the *nix derivative setup properly its just as good.

Try XBMC & Mythtv/Mythbuntu - decide for yourself. They are both very good!

Tried media center and the more items you add to collection in typical Windows fashion bogs the system down.

XBMC on the other hand flies when it's correctly setup and plays everything when VLC is ued as it's default player.

Not to mention other cool things like looking up information about your series and movies so you can see trailers, star ratings, actors, posters, etc. Also, I like you can have a backup of DVD on your disk and it plays it like a disc with menus. I think it even has support for ISOs

I've gone through most media centre applications in the last couple of years, so far the best I've found is MediaPortal. Incredibly easy to setup and maintain. LOTS of support, a huge variety of plugins, skins etc. By far the best at scraping movies, tv series, music etc. Everything is just very polished and very user-friendly.

XBMC will be my second choice.
