1 day to go till the release - I've never used OpenSuse before, but would really try and give it a go. Also going to be trying out the KDE environment for the first time.

What are the main differences between Ubuntu and Opensuse and Gnome and KDE?

And have you used both distributions before?

Thanks, would like to know a bit about it before installing it.

Gnome and KDE are merely different Window managers- similar to XP's theme and Vista's Aero. KDE4 is similar to Vista/7 whilst Gnome is more old school (both are nice, so maybe install both Window managers and stick to the one you decide you like more). There are also window manager specific applications, but you can still install them across each other.
KDE's programs are usually called Kxxxxx (kTorrent, Kate) and Gnome Gxxxx (Gedit, etc).

Ubuntu and OpenSuse..... hmm, where to start. Ubuntu is based on Debian, known as the most stable distrobution of Linux. Ubuntu is too childlike for some, but I prefer it. It uses the .deb installers while OpenSuse, based on SUSE -> RedHat, uses .rpm (Redhat Package Manager). KDE and Gnome is obviously available on both.

Opensuse is out of the box, more customisable than Ubuntu. I haven't used OpenSuse in a while but it has a very large user base so you can't go wrong with it either.

I am also eagerly awaiting this one... will get it first thing tomorrow morning, am an ubuntu man myself, but was dissapointed by the new release, the upgrade broke my system! so I am thinking time to change...

Thanks for the replies. I've been using Ubuntu also (from Jaunty) and not also that impressed with the Karmic release - don't get me wrong, its really fast and looks good - but I'm just sick of recurring problems (I'm referring the the Network manager application) and my system is also freezing up now quite often. Will give it a go in Virtual box first and check it out, then decide.
