Openview activating 35,000 set top boxes per month

eMedia Holdings has released its consolidated annual results for the year ended 31 March 2019, which show that Openview is activating an average of 35,000 set-top boxes per month.

eMedia Holdings has a 67.69% interest in eMedia Investments, which owns e.tv, eNCA, and Openview.

"Openview – inclusive of the e.tv multi-channel business – earned advertising revenue of R131.8 million for the period, said the company.

However, it incurred content costs of R255.7 million – up from R173.6 million the previous year."

is this a loss leader or am I missing something?

It could be a case of the costs of starting up something new. Often is the case when a company open doors or launches a new division or product. Hopefully this is all it is.

Where are all these STBs coming from, seeing that there are so few TVs with built in DVB ports?

Is Game selling 35k STBs a month or who is supplying them?

Huh? The ones at home is connected via HDMI.

Anyway, one of those activations of theirs is a new OpenView STB because the old 2016 one died.

I know households that have 4 of those STB's, one in each room. Obviously they have Netflix or Showmax to supplement their viewing.

Probably still investing in infrastructure. Cost should actually be amortized over the next decade.

Here's an idea. All the people unhappy with DSTV, support these okes and request the sport of your choice.

No Chuck. You are confusing the digital government terrestrial set top boxes with these ones. These are set top boxes for Open View HD satellite, competitors to DSTV. It's what we mostly refer to as a decoder.

aaah ok then these OpenView ones i saw other day inside the Pep Stores

Someone please explain to me. If eNCA is their product why is it not broadcast on the Openview platform?
I would imagine that DSTV would not allow it. Remember that DSTV pays channels for their content. And in the cases of the local news channels, DSTV would say we are going to pay you R10 (silly example) for this year and you must produce your channel exclusively for us. The channel takes the money, pays salaries, creates content, and makes some profit. DSTV then sells ad's on the channel and subscriptions to make a profit.

So DSTV probably has an exclusivity clause in their contract with ENCA.

I have two of them in case Fibre goes down.. A lot of hallmark type movies which is quite nice.. Really not bad considering u only pay for the decoder..

Hi my name is Bryan and I've cut the dstv cord exactly 6 months ago.. Can I have a HooHa! Lol

All the DSTV subscribers retuning ;)

The PVR should be built into the set top box and not as a separate USB device even if they charge more

I actually prefer it separate as you can then swap out and increase storage. The PVR is still actually in the STB though.
