Openview vs DStv

Of course it does. Both OpenView and DSTV are carriers. The channel content is often produced by different TV networks, and is independent of the satellite carrier.
My question was tongue in cheek with regards to the reference of a 6 year old article...

Open view should bring a highlights package of weekend sports to its channels
OpenView decoders should have built in PVR function of 64GB.

Excuse my noob ness, but I still have my DStv dish still installed, so can I just plug in an OV decoder or does it still need a technician to align the dish etc?
yes plugged in mine to the existing dish when i moved in and it worked fine.

Openview vs DStv

Openview recently announced it had acquired the broadcast rights for the English Premier League.

This move placed the free satellite service provider in the same playing field as DStv, as it can now broadcast Premier League matches live on its News & Sports channel.
Things is Open View's normal programs are no match for DSTV, not that I'm a fan at all. Cut the cord over 4yrs ago, opting for 100mbs Fibre instead.

Would love to see more rugby elsewhere. How far is ICASA with ensuring that it becomes a reality and available for all in S.A. I remember DSTV was crying like snowflakes false warning everyone that the game will go bankrupt if they don't have the monopoly anymore, go figure???

Not really a great comparison but OpenView does offer more live sport than easy view. On the weekend, OpenView showed the Man Utd game live, to watch this on dstv would have cost whatever compact costs these days.

You cannot compare Open View against DSTV.
DSTV have unfortunately the monopoly in SA and tied down Open View.
Same story with Telkom, Eskom ect.....so therefore not a news-flash.
For us who do not prefer to watch the same programs over and over and in a time slot of aprox 30 min watch 20 min of advertising and have to pay for it?...
we take Open View any day and any time.
The world or day does not revolved around Sport chanels.
By the way you made a mistake with the amounts of installation....
An Open View once off decoder currently R449.
If you add a memory stick you watch one program and record the other. How's that for free?

I see Openview removed the Da Vinci channel.

This is seriously bad form. The adult shows after 20:00 was really interesting.

Children also have less to watch now.
If this trend continues I will seriously ditch them.

Hi everyone, sorry to go off topic here, I have a problem and I'm hoping someone here can help.
So I stay in a complex and we use a communal dish and I'm not flexible on what I can do with the dish and its cabling. I have one cable coming into my house. The cable is connected to a OVHD decoder and I run another cable from OVHD'd LNB out to my single view Dstv decoder's LNB in. With this set up, I'm unable to watch some channels on Dstv but some are perfectly fine. Is it because some channels on the Dstv are on a different frequency or something hence they don't play? Can someone advise as to how to overcome this problem on my Dstv. I know that it would be much easier if I had 2 cables from the dish but I have a feeling There could still be a way to solve this.
Thanks

No, Unfortunately not, LNB loop through worked perfectly well in the old days because ALL channels available were on one single polarisation, and hence daisy-chained decoders could tune into any channels they wanted to independently. Now the first decoder in the chain determines what channels will be available to all the other decoders.
OVHD goes further in that it will also not tune into any transponders that do not have any OVHD channels on them.
The only way around this is to have a minimum of 2 separate feeds from the Antenna into your unit with a multiswitch connected to ensure all available transponders are available for selection.
Then to add to your woes, MC is now also using Hi-band transponders which means that even then some channels might not be available without some very creative configs on the MC decoder. Soon, that will mean 4 LNB connections for total flexibility if using Universal LNBs.

What LNB type is installed in the communal antenna? TWIN, Quad, Quattro Universal LNB?

Hi thanks for the response. Unfortunately I do not know the type of LNB they use as I don't have access to the dish. I was once told though that they use some complex mutiswitch to distribute many cables to all units. Anyway there is an option to ask for a second cable however every cable is paid monthly and I thought I could avoid that. I feel like we are seriously robbed with this setup I wish there was another way the complex management could adopt which would scrap this monthly payments.
From your explanation there, does it mean if I replace the Dstv and hook 2 OVHD decoders the same way I can be able to watch each independently since they are on one polarisation? I assume. What will happen if the Dstv with an LNB out was first in line and OVHD was second? Would the same setup work? Is there such a Dstv decoder though with an LNB out output?

MC dropped loop though quite a while ago so no their newer decoders can't offer this facility.

Which model MC decoder do you have?
And what exaclty does the BC offer? what is the configuration settings they specify?

Hi Geoff.D sorry I disappeared there. I have the single view HD, I think its U model. Did you Body Coorporate by BC? well there's a contract with Ellies. They manage the whole thing from installation and attend to problems. We have to pay Ellies to rent the cables. So they've put the dishes in strategic points. Each dish services a portion of the building. When a person moves out they have to come and remove the cable from the unit, and then reverse the process when another moves in again CRAZY. I've seen in many flats around Joburg where a tenatnts comes in and plugs their decoder on the socket on the wall and they don't need to pay a cent because the cables are installed in every flat. I understand that this is to avoid everyone from putting their own dish and the place becomes messy.
