New Openview decoder hands-on tested

Satellite TV broadcaster Openview's new decoder offers a much more compact design than its predecessors, but its on-demand streaming content is currently lacking.

After years of teasing that a new smart decoder with Wi-Fi capability was coming, Openview officially launched the OV512 decoder last week.

Nice article, thanks guys.

Not bad. Looks like there's plenty of room for expansion later, so if the price is ok-ish pretty good for a free service.

Hve they improved the HD output on the satelite. Their decorder have been marketed as HD yet in actual fact the HDMI cable spits out 576p.

Looks to be a promising platform, if they capitalise on its cababilities, they could do very well with it.

Yep. Details in the linked article, streaming seems to be min. 720p and some believed 1080p. (Via satellite it will only possibly be 720p max as the main IS20 satellite used can't do more.)

What does installation cost??
Also WiFi based so no extra cost for that, though with little VOD content that way so far.

Whatever (already more?) the satellite input offers - that would normally cost a standard satellite dish installation if not yet done.

Dstv can do 1080

My tv detects the signal resolution and displays what resolutio. The hdmi is supplying a dstv standard decorder supplies 1080i. And the difference is noticable if compared to ovhd 576p.

Most HD satellite DStv is 1080i these days, though I think a few channels still use 720p.

Very few countries use 1080p via satellite due to high costs for that. Dubai was the only place that did it a few years ago.

Thank you, looks interesting but does the USB function as PVR like the old decoder?

It was never broken.
When recording the SABC programs were blocked out.
The USB Flash drive sold was loaded with special software to function with the decoder( File compression codecs).
Bit of a cheek that, SABC is supposed to offer copy-once to all. No problem recording them on an external recorder when sourced from DStv.

@Geoff.D , do you maybe know why?
