OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Thanks Janitor, wasn't implying anything by mentioning it though. ;)

Was also not asking for you to comment on Openweb specifically, but rather if it was even possible for an ISP to use concurrent connections to shaft their clients. My understanding is that it would require them to buy individual accounts from a provider (in this case, IS) and then resell a single account to two customers. Would this be possible?

If you still decline to answer, I understand. Thanks for taking the time to explain as much as you did. Have a good night. ;)

Sitting here with my nzb's downloading at 1 KB/s. My free gig from Vodacon was at least twice as fast on Sunday!
The only high numbers I see with OW this evening is my Diablo 3 latency.

Haven't had cause to come to this thread for a while, I see some stuff went down, OW reps got scared off. Time to start looking for a new ISP me thinks, what you guys reckon is good for gaming / downloading?

I cant comment on other people's pizza choices :)

Have a good one!

Janitor - if you are still around - the uncapped 2mb that you guys do, is it ideal for gaming?
Are there any "star" or other type of rating systems in place that will make my experience less than ideal after a week?

So 6 hours after handing in my cancellation I get random disconnects while playing BF4. Guess I'm going to my bank in the morning and ask/instruct them not to pay OpenWeb next month.

No you may not, he's bound to confidentiality and whatnot, I doubt he can answer that, and so it will remain a conspiracy.

My thinking is that they are "just" a reseller, just like every single other IS "reseller" out there, why would OW be any different, it's just I think OW adopt a BS baffles brains policy with all their different accounts, and to get around the star rating, they have to dish out accounts like candy.

Does no one here remember the days of Axxess "30 gig" accounts? Back in the day when 5 gigs was considered a high end account, Axxess launched a 30 gig package for the same price as 5 gigs. Everyone was like "Wow. Amazing. Such value."

Well, this was when Telkom just sold accounts and didn't have a per gigabyte system. Axxess was taking 30 gig accounts and just letting them run until they hit 30 gigs and then capping them. Telkom caught wind of this, and this was when Telkom as a wholesaler started selling to ISPs on a per gig basis.

So yeah, it's not like OW is the first ISP to pull semi-dodgy ****.

Hi all

If you suspect that you have been duped by signing up with openweb and getting half speeds or no speeds, please email [email protected] with all the details. I have taken this route as i am fairly upset that my account was shared amongst users bar myself. I had a gold account that barely worked and managed to ascertain that it was in use by another person in CPT which is not fair. I paid the full amount for my account but never really got the service.

I view this as fraud and IS are assisting me with this, once done i'll be taking openweb to small claims court to reverse the money. will keep you all posted as this is all hinging on IS providing me with the details.

The bottom line here is Telkom and IS kept being blamed for all the OW issues and that detracts from their brand value they have. Openweb will need to show hard proof in the court that it wasnt them and i have all their feedback in writing which does make life easier.

BLOCK the provider SAGEPAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you can, ask the bank to reverse the money due to the supplier abusing you for cancelling if you feel strongly about it, they are obliged to do it, then yourself and openweb can fight it out in court if they take it that far.

They cannot blacklist you as a dispute will be marked on the transaction by your bank :)

Everything was rosy until Mweb decided to throttle their users to death, resulting in those users joining OW.

I blame Mweb:(

Well not really...OW should know how to manage their capacity better...Im assuming they did not order additional IPC..

Well I can say for the first time in a month that my speeds are amazing tonight , 4mb gold uncapped. Youtube defaults to 1080p without slowing down once. Probably gonna get shaped to death after this though.

It is working now after switching off the router for 25 min. I'll keep a close eye on the consistency of the connection. I am going to instruct the bank not to honour the debit order. I'' send OW a mail and tell them for each and every issue I have or day I don't have connection, and X amount will be deducted from that amount and I'll EFT the outstanding balance on 30 June.

This will come down to: No Service = No Payment.

What you are stating is impossible...according to Kalster. :p

Atleast now less people will laugh at my tin hat of conspiracy and take this matter more seriously. Kudos to you Kryptonite! All of the best with the claim :)

Getting a quote after 8am to start manufacturing those pitchforks. I know for a fact that I am going to make a killing.

I never said they weren't sharing accounts, I said that the evidence was not compelling enough to be as sure as some of you guys were. Like I said, if it comes out that they were in fact screwing people over, I'll call for their heads with the rest of you.

This legal route of Kryptonite is interesting. Looking forward to seeing how that pans out.

Dude, you've come in here guns blazing using logic and evidence from at least a month ago, the same which you were using back then. That's why I have no time to engage. We've explained to you exactly what janitor@plugg has said. And more.
I have not been totally absent, but I have not seen anyone actually citing a source for the existence of concurrent connection accounts having to contend for bandwidth, instead of it being halved. Now that Janitor has come and confirmed the former, I concede that your case is stronger, but still not that clear cut. There are definitely some substandard account handling going on though. The shared password business for instance is terrible. But it does mean that such a bad system could have been handing out the same account details to different people though, something one of them owned up to having happened at least once before.

Also, if they buy bandwidth instead of individual accounts, then the account sharing conspiracy theory goes to pot (pun intended). We don't really know either way yet. Then, if account sharing is confirmed conclusively at some level, it will point towards simple incompetence, instead of nefarious intent.

The most disconcerting thing thus far for me is that MrBEEP and Cableguy are AWOL.

CPA Section?

I tried the CPA route however my brother in law said it's an absolute waste of time as ADSL does not have defined service levels. This is why i have gone with the small claims court, anything less than 5k. It will cost me around 350 to submit and if i lose so what, at least i'll have done it with the right principles.

He said keep it simple, i bought a product, and half of it was given to someone else.

At least you knew where you stood there, with OW it's a very disappointing random sized lucky packet.

What I am asking is if such a thread should be started in the "CPA, Telecoms Regulation and Consumerism" section of this site.

It's not a Telkom problem. OW has been doing this for the past few days. It's been happening so much lately that I bought capped bandwidth through Afrihost so I can actually play before 11PM at night.

Pings are 100% normal on Afrihost.

Ouch! Shaping used to lift at 5pm, so it looks like things have really hit the proverbial fan :(
