OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

That's thing ... This is the cheapest capped option for me, won't be going back to my previous ISP. They even sorted my billing issue out due to me jumping between packages and without locking me in for a month like some of the other ISPs I have used and even advised on a better and yes more sensible package for me.

So far so good :-)

I got a reply from OW, in part:

"It is unfortunately impossible for us to drop our pricing if Telkoms IPC cost is still just over R12 000 per Mbps.

Therefore, any price adjustment made by any ISP is simply more people being contended on a single pipe.

The less you pay the less you get."

I can partially accept blaming Telkom, but come on...I don't know.

Now I'm looking at other 4mb options:

Crystalweb:

R429 -R20 (if you migrate your line -not after Cybersmart, not ever again)
"Priority Tier 1 and Tier 2 Data" -dunno what this means, some kinda priority I guess?

"True Uncapped" -as opposed to fake uncapped(?); they may have a point, if true...

Still a bit too rich for my taste.

Afrihost (website suspiciously similar to openweb's):

R397

"Recommended Use: Gaming, Media, Downloading" -I don't want gaming, but I do want sauntering -what now?

"Semi-Shaped Bandwidth" -semi-shape my ass!

But I keep coming back to Openweb's R249 offer. How bad can it be? If I'm getting 100% linespeed for 23:00-06:00 then that's already more than I get out of my R299 2mb now. The question is how bad is it during the rest of the day for torrents/newsgroups/streaming? Can it really be lower than 50% average for those 'peak' hours for the torrents etc.?

Go on, sign up. Just make sure you have some pennies in your piggy bank in case you need to buy some capped 'daytime' bandwidth. ;)

???

edit: ok, I see now: http://keoma.co.za/

Are you speaking from experience with this specific product, or just OW in general? Can it really be that bad? Can anyone who's using OW currently confirm?

xyz

AfriGenie(?) on Afrihost:

"Over the past few months there has been a dramatic upswing in our users making use of streaming services such as Apple TV, Netflix, Hulu and other VOD services, and unlike P2P downloads, streaming primarily occurs during peak times, as users want to watch their preferred content when they are home. This is great to see! But it does mean that we have had to fast-track planned upgrades to get them in place sooner, to ensure our network remains quick for our clients."

Stupid streamers. I do stream occasionally, but it's mainly after hours. Would anyone be interested in an ISP that focuses on P2P over streaming? Anything like that out there?

I never had any issues with them.
However recently with this whole bunch of issues I unfortunately can't help much as I'm only home on weekends, which is apparently why I get good internet.
So guess I can't give my views on the whole daytime issues. Maybe oneday when I go on leave again I can confirm.
I have a 2Mb Gold Uncapped account for R299 pm btw.

I'm on the '2Mb Gold Uncapped Promotion', which I later found out is supposedly not as good as the standard '2Mb Gold Uncapped'; something to do with the 'Promotion' tag, apparently. But I've never had *any* problems after a slight glitch in the beginning where I was moved to a different backbone. It must be going on/over 2 years now & I get 90%+ 2mb 24/7. Actually more than that since my line was upgraded to 4mb. Can't really comment on gaming, but torrents & bulk downloads work 100% all the time. I don't really stream anything other than 3 or 4 times a month, after hours...which still works fine on 2mb.

I see pretty much the same thing with all the big ISPs mentioned here. Dunno what the mechanics are. Overselling? Congestion? Shaping? Too much streaming? People insisting on *everything* in 4K 7.1 3D?

I think it's a bit like Insurance; where they pick on people at random to deny claims for reasons that could apply to most claims of the same type. ISPs oversell a product, see how many people will stick with them while dragging the rest along with denials, deflections etc. ...or, I dunno, maybe people shouldn't be trying to stream 60fps 4K 'all day long'...or, I reckon, others are just unlucky with congestion/contention.

@ssung

hold on a minute, so what you're saying is I should use my 10x faster account (compared to yours) to stream/download the same content as you because you feel I use too much bandwidth?
If I pay for a service, regardless of what I use that service for (within reason) I should not be told to consume less or content of a lesser quality because it limits access for other users. That's the responsibility of the provider to ensure that clients receive what they pay for.

tl;dr I like nice things, and if I pay for nice things, no one can tell you that you shouldn't use it.

Out of interest, what's your usage like on a monthly basis?

I really don't understand how some ISP's offer cheap capped packages while others can't compete... If it really is costing R5 per gig then how can a company possibly sell it for R1.
