OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

*headache starting*

You have been given a link listing the threads, but you insist I write it all out. No. I'm not going to write out an essay with information you can access with a single click. You are either (a) an arrogant douche with his head up his arse trying to look clever, (b) a troll, or (c) severely stupid.

You made the claim, and I'm asking you to substantiate. It is up to you to do this, having made the claim.

Just as you/zolly linked the sub-forum for ADSL ISP discussions, I could link it to show you your claim is untrue, if I wasn't really interested in discussing the matter or helping others.

Let's try not insulting. But if you're only willing to link a sub-forum, then it's clear that your intentions are not to discuss the matter or help others. The contrary is true for me.

@Arksun and Postmanpot: Kindly go play in the traffic the both of you. Some of us are actually using this thread for what it's intended for.

I'm not sure if Openweb has had a lot of customers join recently, but I've also had the problem where P2P shaping disappears later and later at night. I've also had some issues with streaming, but they seem to resolve themselves pretty quickly most of the time.

Pretty much exactly what I'm experiencing as well.

From 8am to 5pm any form of download appears to be throttled to around 10-20% line speed (nothing unusual there), after 5pm however I generally used to see full line speed across all protocols, but now I'm seeing around 50% until EXACTLY 11:01pm when all throttling is removed instantly.

My complaint is that at no point was I informed that my unshaped hours would be reduced by 5/6hrs per day and I'm expected to pay the same monthly fee for a Gold account. This is totally unacceptable.

I've taken it up with OW through their ticketing system. I was firstly told I should not experience any shaping post 7pm and then was asked to provide a tracert (which I did). Last night I tested my 11pm theory again and saw the same results so I replied with this information. This morning I get the following reply:

I think what is happening is the peak network times are overlapping with the recommended download times causing a delay in your network.

These are the recommended times for downloading:
Monday to Friday from 19:00pm to 07:00am, Friday 19:00pm to Monday 07:00am.

Kindly try this and let us know how things go.

Now I understand that I'm not dealing with an overly technically proficient person here, but come on:
1) The explanation about peak network times and throttling hours overlapping is complete nonsense and disproven immediately by the fact I'm seeing unthrottling occur at EXACTLY the same time every evening.
2) I am attempting to download between the recommended hours. My entire issue here centers around the fact that I'm getting no joy during that period until much later.

My experience lately has been as follows:

Basically no Youtube before 5/6pm. When i first signed up for my Silver account I could generally stream 360p during the day.

International gaming is highly erratic before 5/6pm. Sometimes I get 170 ping to EU sometimes it bounces up to 500ms and sits there. I have tried a capped account with another ISP and this problem disappears. When i first signed up for my Silver account I could generally game at any time, except for between 5 and 6 pm since people coming home seemed to overload the exchange at this time.

I used to be able to download/stream something to watch just before I decided to have supper, but now it seems that I have to wait for shaping to die down. This affects streaming to a far lesser degree, but can still affect some services. As you have pointed out, the time that this shaping on p2p to be removed has shifted later and later, where it used to be 6pm (I'm a Silver account user) every day for P2P to kick into gear.

At this point I am still reasonably happy with the service (I'm not a heavy downloader and generally do between 100 and 150 gigs a month, most of which is streaming and Steam data), but if it gets much worse than this I may start testing out other ISPs again, particularly since I am paying R460 a month for 4 meg.

All sounds very familiar. The problem is I'm paying R200 more a month for the same service :D

Funny thing, for me it was exactly 12:01am this morning and when i woke up at 8am this morning i was shapped to death again. International gaming is impossible, streaming is no way possible, nothing is possible atm. What makes a 100gb capped account so special that it gets preference over uncapped accounts and has no shapping whatsoever at any time of the day. I would like a informed answer about this, not some BS usual openweb story. Give us the truth as to what is going on at Openweb.

What package are you on shadowstalker?

That's weird that your gaming shaping is also messed up. Mine is fine after 6 and on weekends. You tried another ISP to make sure it's not your hardware or the exchange?

Dont have another isp i can test, i tried getting an afrihost trial account but they dont give trail accounts :S It was fine until about 2days ago then the problems started and the delays everywhere.

Kindly email [email protected]

This is usually caused by your ADSL line losing sync to the exchange or similar, but unfortunately we cannot diagnose the issue without doing some tests first.

We look forward to hearing from you

Thanks,

Had a Telkom tech come out this morning to have a look at what was going on. Apparently there's some noise on my line which is causing issues, so now they've downgraded me to 8MB and the noise is gone..? weird.. anyways, i'll test over the weekend and see if i still get disconnected but hopefully this is sorted out now.

Well I've had no reply since my response to OW @ 9am. I assume they are either ignoring me since it's so close to weekend unshaping or are actually investigating my issue.

Cableguy, would you care to comment?

Thanks ill check it out and report back on my findings.

Im on the afrihost account now and its better but not very much im still having problems, any idea as to what to do now?

Do you know how to check your ADSL stats on your router? If you can check for your ADSL SNR Margin and Attenuation Stats, if your line is unstable it'll generally show up in these numbers.

It might also be the early stages of exchange overload. When Telkom first announced the speed upgrades I used to get 10 meg, then got knocked all the way down to 6 meg as more people upgraded their lines.

Code:

Ds Rate (Kbps) 2048
US Margin 13
DS Margin 24
Trained Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 20
US Line Attenuation 9
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 0
CRC Tx Fast 0

CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path
DSL Statistics
Near End F4 Loop Back Count 0
Near End F5 Loop Back Count 0

This is all i could find, i also spoke to telkom just now they told me my line is way too slow and that they will dispatch a tech guy to come check it out. Any other help i can get here to maybe fix it or something would be very much appreciated.

Stats look good, I don't think it's the line quality. Maybe run a traceroute to openweb.co.za and post the results here (or use Zertop's tool here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/607090-quot-Is-it-my-Line-quot-Report-Tool).
