OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Things are flying tonight.

Fastest iPlayer diagnostics I've seen so far:

There was a web adress posted here a while back where you could track your usage. It was users.is.co.za or something along those lines. I forgot what adress was... can somebody link it?

Is NNTP banned on OpenWeb now or what's the story here?

Everything is fast except NNTP.... why?

Seems about right. My torrents are jumping all over the place, but mostly hanging around the 10 - 20 KB/s. Right now it's sitting at 2 KB/s. Seriously? What the hell is going on!

OpenWeb requested that access to the IS user stats resource be blocked, about 2 months ago now. We were warned by MrBEEP.

You can however still use SAIX user stats (and still check for account sharing). Please refer to this post - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...read-(Pt2)?p=12588708&viewfull=1#post12588708.

Do you have a personal relationship with Mr. Beep aka cableguy aka Keoma? Are you affiliated with Openweb? Just asking.

Atm, my OW account's literally crawls like a ****ing snail on my ass.

Strange... Did he happen to mention why he requested it be blocked? Is he wanting to block the SAIX portal as well?

Lol. It's a shame because I've only got this account until the end of the month, 1k a month is a bit steep for me at the moment. Waiting to see what new capped offerings are coming though, would love to stay on the IS network.

The IS user stats portal made it far too easy to check for account sharing and usage. Each active connection listed the ESR (exchange) to which the accounts were connected. So one could easily see this by hovering over the active connections to see where the account was being dialed from. Like the most recent in this thread, before the resource was blocked, two connections on one account in Bryanston JHB and Taj Mahal Durban.

You're late to the party, to say the least.

Since OpenWeb is an IS reseller, it wasn't difficult to have IS block logging in with @openweb.co.za accounts. It's also in IS's interests (so they can keep selling lots of capacity to OW).

When we asked why accounts were clearly being shared, the answer we were told (ad nauseam) is that the usage logs are inaccurate, and that if we want usage logging, we need to ask for it and be moved to a new account.

Account sharing -> incorrect usage

Can you get your head around that?

Furthermore, we proved that the usage was in fact correct. Even DrJohnZoidberg admitted to it, after defending that usage was inaccurate.

Edit: I would strongly suggest going back to these posts about the IS user portal, which also coincided with the blocking of the IS portal, and MrBEEP's hiatus.

I trust this isn't so tiresome any longer.

I had a small hiccup this morning on my account. My telephone handset caused some disturbance on the line, which caused my ADSL line to disconnect constantly.

I have since replaced the handset and am now back on track. Speeds are running at around 95% tonight, which I am happy with.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm on your side, I noticed there was someone else connected to an account that was given to me as well. The thing is, other than switch ISP's there's not much that can be done about it. When I asked MrBEEP some time ago, he told me accounts don't get shared, so I left it at that. Arguing about it wouldn't get me anywhere, and at the time my account was performing well regardless.

The fact that you have no control over your ADSL password was suspicious to begin with. Every other ISP I've used allows this, but with Openweb, you have to contact them to make the change.

I just think that pursuing this is essentially farting against thunder, if things don't go the way you need them to, it's best just to move on and find another ISP.

EDIT: As of 10 PM, my P2P downloads went from 5KB/s to full speed, so right now I can't complain. It's been very "hit & miss" with these guys over the past week.

I asked them to allow me to change my own password, and they put a feature on in my control panel that allows me to do this.

Maybe you should PM cable and ask them to do the same. I change my password every few days myself

Show/teach me how to determine who is sharing my ADSL account and I will gladly remit with proof.

With Afrihost you can actually see the persons number who used your account (should it happen).

The other day I was setting up the internet for my friend, his details didnt work, so i put my account details in and it connected. Then his number appeared in my list.

The past 50 pages have been nothing but hate towards OW, and Cable guy doesnt respond to any rants or theories.

Very low.

From a security perspective, that would be great for me. It would also shoot down any suspicions I had that my account was being shared with someone else. I would literally eat my words if this could be done for me. :)

Just a heads up, my account takes longer to be unshaped after having asked for the password-change ability. And they'll add the ability to see stats, which I never asked for. I also could see the stats for the entire month. So much for "we do not log usage stats". Did they guess my stats for the previous 23 days?

I got told by support that the two are not related. Must be my delusions that I was unshaped at 17:00 for the past year. I has to have been many hours later, like I've noticed since 'activating' password change ability.

That's a little worrying.

They have the ability to add things you don't ask for. Like when you ask for a password change on a account that doesn't have the password change feature enabled and they instead send you a whole new username and password...

This is what keeps me thinking our suspicions are correct. Why do some accounts support password change by the client, and others require Openweb staff intervention? The accounts that seem to have another user based on the stats portals are the ones whose password has to be changed by Openweb staff.

I've noticed recently that over weekends my Gold account performs as it should however on week nights torrents seem to be heavily shaped...at 23:15 last night my downloads were fluctuating between 10KB/s and 50KB/s on a 2MB account. What gives?!

I can only think that Openweb are oversubscribed so even those of us with "premium" accounts are getting nailed.
